New Delhi (Vishvas News). Sub-inspector Anjani Kumar Rai passed away on Mauni Amavasya at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. A post claiming that former Indian team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni extended a helping hand to his family by donating Rs 25 crore is going viral on social media.
Vishvas News investigated the viral claim and found it to be false. Dhoni has made no such announcement. Earlier also similar misleading claims have gone viral in his name. Regarding the incident, the police issued a press release stating that Rai was not on duty in a high-crowd area and he died of a heart attack.
What is going viral?
While sharing the viral post, the thread user wrote in the caption, “Mahendra Singh Dhoni said:- “Inspector Anjani Kumar Rai died in the stampede on the day of this Maha Kumbh Prayag Raj Amavasya and on hearing the news of his death, Dhoni has given Rs 25 crore to the family of Anjani Kumar Rai.”
Investigation
To verify the authenticity of the viral claim, we conducted a Google search using relevant keywords and found no credible information related to the claim.
We further investigated and reviewed Dhoni’s official social media accounts. However, we did not find any information related to the claim.
According to a report published by Navbharat Times on February 5, 2025, the Maha Kumbh Mela Police Department has firmly dismissed the rumors surrounding the death of Sub Inspector Anjani Kumar Rai. Authorities stated that misleading claims circulating on social media, suggesting that he died from injuries sustained in a stampede at the Kumbh Mela, are false. The police clarified that his duty was not at the high-traffic area. On January 30, Sub Inspector Rai was rushed to the hospital after his health suddenly worsened during his shift, where he was pronounced dead. The post-mortem report later confirmed that the cause of death was a heart attack.
On the official ‘Kumbh Mela Police UP 2025’ account, a press release issued by the police was found. The statement clarified, “Anjani Kumar Rai was not on duty in an area with a large crowd. On January 30, 2025, when his health suddenly worsened during his duty, he was taken to the hospital for treatment, where doctors declared him dead. The post-mortem report of Shri Anjani Kumar Rai confirmed that his death was caused by a heart attack. Therefore, the claim that he died from injuries sustained in a stampede is entirely false.”
We contacted Rakesh Pandey, editorial in-charge of Dainik Jagran, Prayagraj, who confirmed that the viral claim is misleading.
Finally, we scanned the account of the user who shared the post with the false claim and found that the user has over 2000 followers and posts content related to cricket.
Conclusion: Vishvas News’ investigation revealed that the viral claim about Mahendra Singh Dhoni giving Rs 25 crore to the family of Late Sub Inspector Anjani Kumar Rai is false and Dhoni has made no such announcement.
