  • Recently, a video circulating on social media claims that a group of extremist Muslims set fire to Hindu houses in Khidragam, Subgram Union, Bogra, Bangladesh. A social media handle on X (formerly Twitter) posted the video of the fire incident with a Hindi caption, which translated to: “Bangladesh, Bogra: The anti-Hindu government of Bangladesh has committed inhuman atrocities on minority Hindus. Hindus are being locked in their homes and their houses are being set on fire.” Another handle, @k36077, posted the same video on December 19 with the caption: “A group of #extremistMuslims set #fire to Khidragam in Subgram Union of #Bogra district! All the destruction of #minority and helpless families!” Some posts on X making this claim can be found here, here, here, and here. Fact-Check Upon investigation, Rumor Scanner found that the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit or a spark from an electric line. We also confirmed that the victims were Muslim families. There was no Hindu-Muslim angle; instead, the fire at Muslim houses was falsely portrayed as an attack on Hindus with a communal spin. The incident’s location was mentioned as Bogra, Bangladesh in the claim posts. A relevant keyword search and investigation revealed the same 49-second video uploaded on Facebook by Md. Rasel Mahmud on December 7. The video was posted with the Bengali caption, which was automatically translated on Facebook as “Fire from electrical short circuit in Khidradhama village in Subgram Union of Bogra Sadar.” Further investigation revealed a post by a local journalist, who posted the same video on December 7 at 5:52 PM. This post appears to be the origin of the video. We found brief details of the incident in this post. The local journalist, Hakim Abul Goni Mondal, who goes by the name Hakim Press Bagura on Facebook, wrote in the caption of the video post: “5 families are completely destroyed in Khidradhama village of Subgram Union of Bogra Sadar. A fire broke out at 5 o’clock in Khidradhama village of Bogra Sadar Subgram Union. The fire is believed to have been caused by an electric short circuit in the primary stage, which led to the burning of seven to eight houses. The estimated damage stands at about 15 lakh taka. The individuals whose houses were burnt are Md. Fazlul Paramanik, Jony Paramanik, Sagar Paramanik, Siddique Paramanik, and Sohell Paramanik…” The local journalist Hakim Abul Goni Mondal also posted photos of the burnt house ashes with the same caption on the same day. The following day, we also found live videos from the scene on his Facebook. We also spoke with him over the phone, and he confirmed that the fire was caused by electricity. He also mentioned that all the victims of the incident are Muslims and that there are relatives of his among the victims. Later, we found a report in the Daily Karatoa, published on December 7. The report stated: “A massive fire in the Khidradhama Madhyapara area of Bogra Sadar has gutted all the belongings of seven families. According to sources from the Bogra Fire Service Office, an electric spark broke out on a rural electricity pole passing over the house of Abu Bakkar and Fazlur Rahman in the area at around 5 pm on Saturday (December 7). The spark ignited a fire in the house, which then spread to several other houses attached to the two men’s house. The fire destroyed many items, including furniture, in the houses. It caused a loss of 8 to 10 lakh taka.” To sum up, a video of a fire at Muslim houses in Bogra, caused by an electrical fault, was falsely shared with the claim that Muslims set Hindu houses on fire in Bogra, Bangladesh. Therefore, the claim that Muslims set fire to Hindu homes in Bogra is entirely false. Sources 1. Statement and post by a local journalist 2. Daily Karatoa News Article 3. Facebook posts by locals
