| - A video showing a series of coloured smoke bombs going off along a line of firecrackers on a street has gone viral on social media, where users have claimed that it shows Holi celebrations.
How did we find out the truth?: Under a now-deleted claim, we came across one user who said that the video did not show Holi, but showed the "Chinese Lantern Festival."
Another user shared a screenshot of a TikTok video showing the same visuals and also said that it showed China's Lantern Festival.
The caption in the screenshot mentioned "Chaoshan" twice.
Taking a cue from this, we ran a reverse image search on the video, supplementing it with the word 'Chaoshan'.
This led us to a Facebook post by a page called 'News Daily News', shared on 13 February, which was captioned 'Chaoshan Old Street celebrates Lantern Festival'.
We also came across the video on a blogger named Chen Mingkun's Facebook page, captioned, "Chaoshan Old Street is prosperous during Lantern Festival."
An Instagram page called 'itschina.baby' had shared this video as one of "The sixteenth day of the first lunar month," on 16 February 2025, nearly a month before Holi.
Another Facebook post sharing this video mentioned that the celebrations of the Lantern Festival on 12 February marked the culmination of the Chinese New Year celebrations.
While the 16th day of the first lunar month was not a major national holiday, "it holds cultural significance in certain regions and communities across China," the post read.
More on the Lantern Festival: China's Lantern Festival is an annual one, marking the end of the the Lunar New Year period, Associated Press reported.
It is celebrated on the 15th day of the first lunar month, the report added.
The website of the International Department of the Communist Party of CPC (IDCPC) also shared the same information, saying that the Lantern Festival marked the end of the Lunar New Year .
The festival involves "lantern shows and folk dance everywhere" along with people bursting firecrackers.
Conclusion: A video showing China's Lantern Festival is being shared with the false claim that it shows Holi celebrations.
