  • On May 19, 2021, pop singer Demi Lovato revealed on Twitter that they are nonbinary and are changing their pronouns to they/them. In a video also debuting their new podcast "4D with Demi Lovato," Lovato said, “Over the past year and a half, I’ve been doing some healing and self-reflective work. And through this work, I’ve had the revelation that I identify as nonbinary. With that said, I’ll officially be changing my pronouns to they/them.” “I'm still learning & coming into myself, & I don't claim to be an expert or a spokesperson. Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me," they added. Their full video can be viewed here: Following their announcement, Snopes readers asked us to explain the term "nonbinary" and “genderqueer.” The word genderqueer refers to a nonbinary gender. Lovato identifies as nonbinary. The Trans Journalists Association explains the meaning behind “nonbinary” as: An umbrella term for genders other than man and woman. This is also a term for a specific gender. While non-binary is considered a trans identity, not everyone who is non-binary considers themselves trans. Be aware that Indigenous communities and communities of color have other words to describe gender variance. Sometimes these terms can be included in the non-binary umbrella and sometimes they cannot. Here's a short explainer on the term. Lovato also released "Dancing with the Devil" this year, a documentary series about their substance-use disorder and rehabilitation. Her podcast, "4D with Demi Lovato" is produced by OBB Sound. The first episode with writer and performance artist Alok Vaid-Menon can be seen here. Given that Lovato has themselves made this announcement, we rate this claim as “True.”
