We fact check and found this claim to be Half true. The Claim The caption of a Facebook video reads, “Stomach Slimming No Exercise No Diet Lose Belly Fat Side Fat Fat Chest Arm Super Fast.” The video further displays the procedure to prepare the fat-slimming drink with warm water, cucumber and banana. Fact Check Is it possible to burn fat without exercise and diet? No. Losing fat is a multidimensional approach. If a person wants to lose fat, one needs to find out the cause of weight gain: inflammation, leaky gut, hormone imbalance, toxins, low metabolism, intake of medicines like steroids, etc. Once the cause is identified, the diet and lifestyle modifications are done accordingly to lose fat. Also, fat reduction can only be achieved naturally by weight loss through physical activity and a well-balanced calorie-deficit diet. Patients wishing to lose weight should participate in physical activity and caloric restriction to improve their chances of burning fat and losing weight. Remember, weight loss can’t be specific to a region; the whole body loses weight altogether, even though the visible differences can vary slightly. Lastly, it is not possible to reduce fat in a few days naturally. It is a gradual process that takes a lot of effort and time. Voomika Mukherjee, Health & Nutrition Life Coach shares her views saying, “Belly fat is the visceral fat surrounding the liver and other organs in the abdomen, close to the portal vein that carries blood to the liver. This fat can harm the body, but proper measures can be taken to reduce belly fat. To reduce belly fat, one needs to follow a well-planned routine which includes 1) Getting Enough Sleep: Sleep deprivation leads to an increase in ghrelin levels and a lowering of the leptin levels in the body, which is responsible for making you hungry. It is also responsible for metabolic and endocrine alterations and a reduction in glucose tolerance. And hence affects various aspects of one’s health, including belly fat accumulation. 2) Drink Enough Water: There is a positive correlation between water consumption and weight loss. Studies show that water helps the body metabolize stored fat efficiently. 3) Workout Regularly: Exercising daily helps with body-weight management. Exercises that specifically target the abdominal area would go a long way in helping reduce belly fat. 4) Track Your Calories: Eating the right food is central to losing belly fat. It is ideal to follow a well-thought-out diet planned as per your needs and requirements.Hence losing belly fat without taking care of your body is neither advisable nor possible.” Clinical Nutritionist Pariksha Rao says, “Fat burners are substances that improve lipid metabolism, enhance weight loss and reduce fat absorption. Two foods that have garnered a lot of attention in recent times due to their effectiveness in aiding weight loss are lemon and ginger. Lemon is rich in Vitamin C and works by diluting fat and reducing cholesterol levels. Significant amounts of vitamin C in the diet have been shown to improve fatty acid oxidation by 30% compared to those who consume less vitamin C. A diet rich in thermogenic foods also helps burn fat effectively. These are foods that induce heat and thereby help in burning fat. Ginger contains various compounds like gingerols, flavonoids and terpenoids. It also contains capsaicin that induces thermogenesis, boosts metabolism, increases lipolysis and controls appetite, thereby modulating obesity and aiding in weight loss. But, these compounds need time to work.” Can consuming water with cucumber and banana make you lose fat without diet and exercise? Not exactly. Practically, it is not possible that a person can lose fat without any diet restriction and dietary modification, as stated above. Losing weight or burning fat needs a multidimensional approach. Also, no scientific studies can be found that can prove the effectiveness of using this approach for weight loss and burning fat. Even though both the ingredients used, i.e., banana and cucumber, have their benefits in losing weight, any such regime might aid, but only when used in conjunction with physical activity and dietary restriction. Bananas are very nutritious for health and contain various nutrients. They are a good source of fiber, which helps in reducing body weight. It is also believed that bananas can make one feel full longer, which may help you eat fewer calories in the long term. Similarly, cucumber is low in fat and calories, and their high levels of water and soluble fibre help to burn fat. They also contain nutrients such as vitamin K and vitamin A. Dietitian Kamna Chauhan clarifies this by stating, “Drinking water immersed with banana and cucumber cannot make you slim, but it can help you in the process. Every ingredient has its own properties. These drinks help you fulfill your satiety level so that you can eat less. Cucumbers are considered an extremely low-calorie food made of 96% water. They are packed with minerals, dietary fibres and other vitamins. Bananas have fibre which slows down digestion and keeps you full.” Voomika Mukherjee further states, “As a nutritionist, we do suggest drinking a lot of infused waters but not for the purpose of weight loss. It helps remove toxins from the body, adds some anti-oxidants and nutrients into the water and hence makes one feel lighter. This infused water will give you a low-calorie snack to keep you from choosing a high-calorie one. This will help you lose weight along with exercise and small-portion meals.” To sum it up, it can be stated that despite being beneficial for health, both bananas and cucumbers can help in burning fat. But, a person also needs to perform physical activity and follow a dietary regime as per the condition of the person. Lastly, the causative agent for the weight gain needs to be established, and then the person needs to be treated for that in order to maintain a healthy body.
