  • Last Updated on February 10, 2025 by Neelam Singh Quick Take A 15 minute social media post claims that turmeric can cure diabetes in 17hrs. We fact checked and found the claim to be False. The Claim A Facebook video claims to feature India TV news, showing Rajat Sharma and Dr. Devi Shetty stating that consuming turmeric can cure diabetes within 17 hours. They suggest that the active compound in turmeric, curcumin, can quickly normalise blood sugar levels and completely cure diabetes. Fact Check Has India TV or Rajat Sharma endorsed a diabetes medicine? No. The video in question is a deepfake, featuring an AI-generated voice overlaid on publicly available footage of Rajat Sharma reading the news. In many instances, the lip movements do not align with the audio, clearly indicating manipulation. Similar deceptive videos have previously targeted well-known figures such as Mithun Chakraborty, Shahrukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Akshay Kumar, Yogi Adityanath, and Hema Malini. These videos typically use clips from their past interviews with altered audio to falsely depict them promoting unverified diabetes treatments. Additionally, we have previously verified one more deepfake video that falsely marketed diabetes medicines, allegedly endorsed by Dr. Devi Shetty. Can turmeric cure diabetes in just 17 hours? No, there is no scientific basis for this claim. Diabetes is a complex metabolic disorder that cannot be reversed or cured in a matter of hours by any known remedy, including turmeric. Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Some studies suggest curcumin may help regulate blood sugar levels over time by improving insulin sensitivity and reducing oxidative stress. However, these effects are gradual and require consistent consumption over weeks or months, not hours. The idea that diabetes can be cured in 17 hours is not supported by any credible research or medical authority. Dr Swati Dave, PhD in Food and Nutrition, said “Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has potential anti-inflammatory effects, but its absorption is limited. Even in high doses, it cannot replace standard diabetes treatments.” Does turmeric have any real benefits for diabetes? Yes, but only as a supportive supplement, not a cure. Research suggests that curcumin may help in managing diabetes-related complications. Studies indicate that it can reduce insulin resistance, decrease inflammation, and lower fasting blood sugar levels when consumed regularly. However, these benefits occur over time and cannot replace standard diabetes treatments such as medication, diet, and exercise. Moreover, the bioavailability of curcumin is low, meaning the body absorbs only a small amount. To enhance absorption, turmeric is often consumed with black pepper (which contains piperine) or healthy fats. Even with these enhancements, turmeric remains a supplementary aid rather than a primary treatment for diabetes. Why do such misleading claims exist? Because quick-fix solutions attract attention. Misinformation about natural cures spreads easily, especially when people are desperate for solutions. Claims that promise instant results, like “cure diabetes in 17 hours”, exploit people’s hopes but lack scientific backing. Always verify health claims with reliable sources such as peer-reviewed studies, doctors, or health organisations before believing or acting on them. Dt. Harita Adhvaryu, Senior Clinical Dietitian at Ezcure Diabetes Care in Ahmedabad said “People often fall for miracle cure claims because they sound easy and quick. Unfortunately, diabetes management is not about quick fixes but about sustainable lifestyle changes.” Dr. Ayush Chandra, diabetes expert and the founder of Nivaran Health in Delhi NCR, emphasizes that managing diabetes requires a comprehensive approach. He explains, “Effective diabetes care involves a lot more than just turmeric. It includes the appropriate use of medicines and insulin under a doctor’s supervision, along with maintaining a balanced diet, staying physically active, staying hydrated, prioritising mental health, and regularly monitoring blood sugar levels.” Dr. Ubaid ur Rahman, General Physician at Holy Mission Clinic in New Delhi, states, “Diabetes is a chronic condition that demands ongoing management through a mix of lifestyle modifications, regular exercise, and medical treatment. Evidence-based care, including prescribed medications and regular monitoring, is crucial for effective control. Relying on unproven home remedies or quick fixes can delay proper treatment and worsen the condition.” Final Thoughts Turmeric cannot cure diabetes in 17 hours. While it has potential benefits for blood sugar control, these effects take time and are not a substitute for medical treatment. Sustainable diabetes management requires a long-term commitment to healthy lifestyle choices and professional medical guidance. Don’t fall for miracle cure claims—science doesn’t work that way.
