A post shared on social media purports a President from an African country shared a video supporting former President Donald Trump after he surrendered to Fulton County jail. The world is watch the fall of America in amazement. #FreeTrump #Trump2024 #BlacksForTrump pic.twitter.com/Uu2EkdRqm5 — Melissa Tate (@TheRightMelissa) August 26, 2023 Verdict: False The video stems from a satirical account. Fact Check: Trump was indicted in Georgia along with 18 others for alleged illegal efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 Presidential election, PBS reported. Trump turned himself Aug. 24 to a Fulton County jail where he was booked and had his mugshot taken. The Twitter post purports a President in Africa supported Trump after his mugshot was shared online. The video shows a man dressed in military attire and addressing the camera with a flag to his left. “My name is President Obonjo of Lafta Republic,” the man states in the video. “Donald Trump is a friend and I urge the American government to release Donald Trump immediately.” The claim is inaccurate. There is no credible news report that suggests this video is legitimate. The video was first posted on a satirical TikTok account. The Republic of Lafta is fictional, as is its President. The TikTok creator responsible for the video has posted a response to the news that his video has gone viral in the U.S. on Facebook saying, “Woke up to find out I have blown up in America, a big push by Conservative Donald Trump supporters.” Obonjo is a fictional comedy character that has appeared in several videos online. There is also a website that identifies Obonjo as a comedic character. The site states, “President Obonjo is a comedic genius who has spearheaded a revolution in the comedy industry.” (RELATED: Joe Biden Embellishes Fire Story In Recent Remarks In Hawaii) This is not the first time misinformation has been shared online.
