  • Last Updated on July 18, 2024 by Nivedita Quick Take A few social media posts claim that Amla (Indian Gooseberry) helps in reducing anger. We fact-checked and found that the claim is mostly false. The Claim “If there is a lot of anger, then in the morning eat one piece of Amla jam daily,” reads the Instagram post. The post can be seen here. A screenshot is given below. Fact Check What causes anger? There are multiple physiological and psychological reason that can act as triggers for anger in an individual. The reasons can be distinctively different in every individual. Mayo Clinic defines anger as ‘a natural response to perceived threats.’ Medical experts suggest that being angry is not always a bad thing. It often helps to express. However, unexpressed, pent-up anger is often associated with multiple health problems including heart disease, high blood pressure, peptic ulcers and stroke. Can Amla reduce anger? No. We could not find any medical research that proves that Amla reduces stress. However, Amla is proven to be helpful in multiple other health conditions including blood pressure. Such health conditions can act as irritants or triggers for anger. But, this again, lacks any direct evidence. Certified Dietitian and Health Coach, Voomika Mukherjee says, “There is not much research done to show effect of Amla on anger. Hence, there is no conclusive evidence for this claim. However, Ayurveda considers Amla or Amalaki as a divine medicine which works on rejuvenating, longevity and holistic properties that ensure both mind and body balance. Regular intake of Amla, helps in lowering blood pressure because of the abundance of antioxidants properties, Vitamin C and minerals especially potassium which helps in dilating the blood vessels and hence the BP.”
