  • Fact Check: Neither Kuki militants nor from Manipur - this clip shows guerrilla warfare in Myanmar India Today, in its investigation, found that the video is from Myanmar and not related to the ongoing unrest in Manipur. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video, based on local news reports, shows guerrilla forces clashing with police in Myanmar. As Manipur continues to burn amid clashes between Meiteis and Kukis, the state has become a lightning rod for misinformation. Videos of gunfire, arson, and violence, purportedly from Manipur, have flooded social media. One such video allegedly shows Kuki militants surrounding a building in Manipur’s Imphal and firing automatic and semiautomatic weapons inside it. “Here's a video revealing the so-called innocent Kukis firing nonstop; the gunfire occurred in the Imphal valley, not in the hills,” read a tweet containing this video. The archived version of such posts can be seen here and here. India Today, in its investigation, found that the video was from Myanmar and not related to the ongoing unrest in Manipur. Our Probe Upon reverse-searching the video’s keyframes with relevant keywords, we found a longer and better-quality version of the same video shared by a Myanmar-based Facebook page on May 22. According to this post, the video showed an attack on a police station in the Sagaing township of Myanmar’s Sagaing district by guerrilla forces. The verified YouTube channel of the Mandalay Free Press, a Myanmar-based news outlet, also shared a video of the same incident on May 22. This contained the viral clip. According to the video’s description as well, it was from the Sagaing township of Myanmar. Quoting an official from the People's Defence Force of Myanmar, the channel said at least ten members of the guerrilla group were killed during the attack. The PDF is the armed wing of the National Unity Government which claims to be the country’s legitimate administration in exile. Several other Myanmar-based news outlets also reported the incident. According to a report by BNN, the attack took place at a police checkpost in the Badu village of Sagaing. At least ten PDF groups were part of the attack and the incident left the village devastated with houses burnt and residents forced to flee. Sagaing in Myanmar is roughly 560km away from Manipur’s capital Imphal. So, based on local news reports, it appears that the gunfight seen in the viral video has nothing to do with the ongoing Manipur conflict.
