Newschecker found the viral message to be fake with the link leading to a phishing website. “Registration is going on for ‘Pradhan Mantri Ramban Security Scheme.’ Under this scheme, all youth will get financial help of 4,000,” reads the viral message originally written in Hindi. While several Twitter and Facebook users shared the message claiming they received the cash, few Tweets tagged the Prime Ministers’ office and questioned the veracity of the claim after they received the message on WhatsApp. To investigate the claim, Newschecker started by analyzing the link shared along with the viral message. The link ends with a ‘blogpost.com’ and does not contain ‘gov’ in the link which is the domain name for government websites. On opening the link, ‘pm-rambaan–suraksha–yojnaa2021.blogspot.com’ we got a notification saying, ‘Deceptive site ahead.’ The link is marked as a phishing website by Google. Phishing websites impersonate genuine websites in order to collect personal information from people. Further, on running a keyword search for ‘Pradhan Mantri Ramban Suraksha Yojana’ we did not find any government notification or reports on the scheme, and instead we found a Tweet dated October 21 by PIB fact check -the nodal agency in countering misinformation on government policies and schemes. The Tweet in Hindi warns, “beware of fraud being done in the name of the central government” and urges people to never share your personal information on such websites.’ A message promising`4000 was widely shared on social media claiming to be a government’s scheme. Newschecker’s analysis shows the viral message is spam.
