  • FACT CHECK: Did Australia Recently Declare George Soros A ‘Global Terrorist?’ A viral post shared on X claims Australia recently declared Hungarian-American billionaire and philanthropist George Soros a “global terrorist.” Australia declares George Soros a global terrorist!! Do you support this? Yes or No pic.twitter.com/pnhI1P51uV — Trump Lover❤🇮🇳🇺🇸 (@SUBRATA30016572) March 19, 2024 Verdict: False The claim is false. A spokesperson for Soros denied the claim’s validity in an email to Reuters. Fact Check: Mark Malloch Brown announced he is stepping down as president of Soros’ Open Society Foundations earlier in March, according to Fortune. The announcement follows Soros’ son, Alex Soros’ takeover of the foundation, the outlet reported. “Australia declares George Soros a global terrorist!! Do you support this? Yes or No,” the X post, viewed over 100,000 times, purports. The post, which includes a photo of Soros, does not provide a source to support its claim. The claim is false. Check Your Fact found no credible news reports to support the claim that Australia purportedly declared Soros a “global terrorist.” In fact, the opposite is true. Reuters labeled the claim as false via a Mar. 28 article. A spokesperson for Soros confirmed the claim is false via email, the outlet indicated. “This is false,” the spokesperson said of the claim. Additionally, Soros’ name is not included in a list of terrorist organizations available via the Australian National Security Website. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also has not publicly commented on the claim. Furthermore, the claim is neither referenced via the website for Soros’ Open Society Foundations nor his personal X account. This is not the first time a false claim about Soros has circulated online. Back in April 2022, USA Today previously debunked a different social media post that claimed China had supposedly declared Soros a terrorist.
