Fact Check
What is Candida overgrowth?
Candida overgrowth is a condition in which the fungus Candida albicans grows out of control in the body. It is a type of yeast that is naturally present in the body, but it can sometimes grow too much and cause problems. Candida overgrowth can occur in any part of the body, but it is most common in the mouth, throat, vagina, and gut.
Certain factors can disrupt the balance of microorganisms in the body, leading to an overgrowth of Candida. These factors may include a weakened immune system, prolonged use of antibiotics and hormonal imbalances. Further factors can be high sugar and carbohydrate diets, chronic stress, and other underlying health conditions.
Does garlic treat Candida overgrowth?
Not solely. We have no evidence that confirms applying garlic directly on the affected area or consuming it cures Candida overgrowth. However, there is scant evidence to support the use of garlic for treating Candida overgrowth. Garlic has shown antifungal properties in lab studies. Some people believe that eating garlic can help prevent or treat Candida overgrowth. But there is no scientific consensus on this issue.
Another social media post shared the use of garlic water as a remedy for yeast infections has gained significant traction on Facebook.
Dr Aseem Sharma, DNB (Dermatology), MBA & FMUHS (Trichology & Hair Disorders) informs, “Garlic and coconut oil might have certain health benefits. However, there is scant scientific evidence to support their effectiveness in treating candida overgrowth or any fungal infection. It is best to consult a healthcare professional for appropriate diagnosis and treatment options.”
THIP MEDIA conducted a fact check on treating nasal congestion with garlic. In this story, our ENT Specialist Dr Priyajeet Panigrahi, MBBS, DNB, and MNAMS, informs, “Garlic is a spice that has a characteristic odor. It contains several bioactive components, including organic sulphides, saponins, phenolic compounds, and polysaccharides. Major bioactive components in garlic are organic sulphides such as allicin, alliin, diallyl sulphide, diallyl trisulfide, ajoene, and S-allyl-cysteine.”
He further informed, “Garlic and its bioactive components exhibit various biological functions, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and cardiovascular protective effects. It is also recognized for its anticancer, hepatoprotective, digestive system protective, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, neuroprotective, renal protective, antibacterial, and antifungal activities.”
Our Dermatologist Dr Jyothy Kannangath informs, “Garlic is high in allicin. Allicin has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of fungi and bacteria. Studies suggest that this compound can protect against candida overgrowth. It may even reduce the ability of candida to attach to cells lining the mouth. Taking garlic supplements may increase the risk of bleeding. If you take an anticoagulant (blood thinner), such as warfarin (Coumadin), or undergoing a surgery, tell your health care provider about garlic supplements”.
Our research shows that garlic contains ‘Allicin,’ which has proven to have antifungal properties. But it can cause various side effects, such as, diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, etc. Our Nutritionist Nidhi Sarin confirms the same. She says, “Garlic can cause gastrointestinal problems, flatulence, and changes the intestinal environment.”
Also, a research paper published by the University of Melbourne investigated the effectiveness of garlic as the treatment for candidiasis. This research concluded that the short-term oral doses of garlic were inconclusive.
In conclusion, garlic can be a part of an overall treatment plan for Candida overgrowth when used in combination with other interventions. These includes antifungal medications, dietary changes, and lifestyle modifications. It’s best to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized guidance on incorporating garlic or any other natural remedies into your treatment regimen.
Does applying coconut oil treat coconut overgrowth?
Not necessarily. Coconut oil is often promoted as a natural remedy for Candida due to its potential antifungal properties. Coconut oil contains a unique fatty acid called lauric acid, which has been shown to have antimicrobial effects against various pathogens, including Candida species.
Dr Kannangath further informs, “Coconut oil possess moisturizing and anti-inflammatory action. Coconut oil is high in caprylic acid, capric acid, lauric acid and fatty acids with anti-fungal properties that can inhibit the growth of C. albicans and other pathogens. Lauric acid in coconut is also effective against mouth sores and can prevent candida infections in the mouth. Even though garlic and coconut oil exhibit antifungal properties, candida requires antifungal medications prescribed by a dermatologist.”
While some anecdotal evidence suggests that coconut oil may help alleviate Candida symptoms, it’s important to note that scientific research on its effectiveness is limited. Coconut oil alone may not eliminate Candida overgrowth, especially in more severe cases entirely.
However, coconut oil can be a part of a comprehensive treatment approach for Candida overgrowth when used in conjunction with other interventions, such as antifungal medications, dietary modifications, and lifestyle changes. It’s crucial to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized guidance on incorporating coconut oil or any other natural remedies into your treatment plan.
It’s also worth noting that dietary modifications, such as reducing sugar and refined carbohydrate intake and consuming a balanced and nutrient-rich diet, are generally recommended when dealing with Candida overgrowth. Maintaining a healthy gut environment and supporting immune function are important aspects of managing Candida-related issues.
