Investigation
To verify the viral claim, we first searched about the earthquake in Delhi-NCR. The National Center for Seismology’s (NCS) official X handle shared a post at 5.46 am on February 17, 2025. According to the post, an earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred at 5:36 am on February 17, the epicentre of which was Delhi and the depth was five kilometres beneath the earth’s surface.
Later, at 8:02 am, tremors of magnitude 4.0 were also felt in Siwan, Bihar.
According to the news published on Dainik Jagran’s website on February 17, 2025 following the earthquake, Delhi Police has issued a helpline number. There is no information about any loss of life or property.
Upon closely analysing the viral video, we noticed that it is dated February 15, 2025, at 10:48 pm, whereas the earthquake in Delhi-NCR occurred on February 17, 2025, at 5:36 am. This confirms that the viral video is not from Delhi-NCR.
We then extracted a key frame from the video and searched it using Google Lens. This led us to the account of user Muhammad Abdullah Hashmi, who posted the video on February 16, 2025. According to this post, the video is from the CCTV at his home, capturing the tremors from the earthquake in Islamabad.
According to a report published on The Dawn website on February 15, 2025, an earthquake of magnitude 4.8 was felt in Islamabad and Rawalpindi at 10:48 pm, with its epicentre located eight kilometres away from Rawalpindi.
In this regard, we contacted Dainik Jagran’s chief correspondent VK Shukla, in Delhi. He confirmed that the earthquake in Delhi occurred on the morning of February 17, 2025, while the viral video is dated February 15, 2025. This confirms that the video is not of today’s earthquake video.
We scanned the Facebook profile of the user who shared the video from Pakistan claiming it to be from Delhi-NCR and discovered that the user has around 16000 followers.
Conclusion: Earthquake tremors were felt in Delhi-NCR at 5:36 am on February 17, 2025. However, the viral video being shared in connection with this is from the earthquake that struck Islamabad, Pakistan, on February 15, 2025.
