  • FACT CHECK: Does This Image Show Egypt Projecting The Palestinian Flag Onto The Pyramids? An image shared on Facebook over 300 times allegedly shows the Palestinian flag projected onto Egypt’s Great Pyramids of Giza. Verdict: False The Palestinian flags have been edited into a picture of the Giza Pyramids. The unaltered version was uploaded to Wikimedia Commons in 2014. Fact Check: Conflict broke out between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas starting on May 10, with the groups firing ordnance at each other, The Washington Post reported. Palestinian medical officials have reported over 220 deaths, and Israeli officials have reported over 10, according to Reuters. On Facebook, users are sharing an image that purportedly shows the Egyptian government projecting the Palestinian flag onto the three pyramids in Giza at night. One Facebook page sharing the picture wrote, “Egypt showing the flag of Palestine on the pyramids. Thank you Egypt!” A reverse image search revealed the image being shared online amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict has been digitally altered. Check Your Fact found the unaltered version on Wikimedia Commons, where a user named Ayah Ahmed uploaded it in 2014. The two versions were shot from the same angle, though the Palestinian flag has been superimposed onto the pyramids in the Facebook image. The Wikimedia Commons description of the unaltered photo roughly translates to “Arabic: Sound and Light – The Pyramids of Giza,” according to Google Translate. (RELATED: Does This Video Show Fire From An Explosion That Killed Hundreds Of Jewish People In Israel?) False claims about flags being projected onto the Giza Pyramids have previously circulated on social media. For example, the fact-checking website Misbar debunked another photo photoshopped to make it seem like Egypt lit up the pyramids with the Lebanese flag last year after an explosion killed over 200 people in Beirut. Egypt has said it will allocate $500 million to help with reconstruction efforts in Gaza, according to Reuters. The country has also sent medical aid to Gaza, The Times of Israel reported.
