| - A video showing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for Kalkaji Ramesh Bidhuri, who is often in the media for his offensive remarks against fellow politicians, has gone viral on social media ahead of the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections.
The video: In the video, a group of people can be heard asking Bidhuri for help with their children's school and future. To their request, the leader can be heard asking, "Why did you birth children then?"
Further in the video, men express their anger and disappointment over Bidhuri's statement, comparing his behaviour to the times when leaders go door-to-door asking for votes.
The video is being shared against the upcoming Delhi Assembly polls, which are scheduled to be held on 5 February.
News organisation The Siasat Daily also shared this post on their X account.
But...?: While it is true that Bidhuri made the remarks in question, the incident dates back to September 2022, when parents of children attending the Kendriya Vidyalaya in Badarpur, Delhi had approached him with concerns about the school.
How did we find out the truth?: We noticed that the viral video carried the logo of news organisation Mojo Story on the upper-right corner.
To look for the longer version of the video, we ran a keyword search using the term 'Mojo story Ramesh Bidhuri why did you give birth'.
This took us to a post by journalist and Mojo Story's founding editor Barkha Dutt, who had shared the reshared the clip from the organisation's account on 29 September 2022.
It carried a link to the full video on Mojo Story's verified YouTube channel, which was shared on 7 September 2022, titled "पढ़ा नहीं सकते तो बच्चे पैदा क्यों करते हो" | Delhi BJP MP Amid Fear Of Kendriya Vidyalaya Closure".
[Translation: "If you can't educate them, why do you give birth to children"]
The video's caption elaborated on the issue, mentioning that parents of children attending the Kendriya Vidyalaya in Delhi's Badarpur feared that the school would shut down, as it had stopped taking new admissions and was asking students to seek transfers.
When they raised their concerns with their MP Ramesh Bidhuri, he asked, "If you can't educate them, why do you give birth to children?," it noted.
In the video, the school's students talk about the issues they face with the school's infrastructure and facilities.
This statement was shared also shared by news organisation Aaj Tak with the same context in September 2022.
Conclusion: An old video of BJP candidate Ramesh Bidhuri asking parents why they gave birth to children if they were unable to educate them is being shared, without context, ahead of the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections.
