Does pomegranate juice protect sperm from oxidative damage?
Not exactly. Pomegranates are rich in antioxidants like polyphenols, which may help reduce oxidative stress that can affect sperm and male fertility. However, research linking pomegranate juice directly to sperm protection in humans is limited. A 2014 study showed that pomegranate extract and galangal powder improved sperm motility in men with low semen quality, but this involved specific doses of pomegranate extract, not regular juice. Another study in 2014 showed that pomegranate juice improved sperm concentration and motility in animals, but we need more research to confirm these effects in humans.
Can pomegranate juice strengthen the uterine lining?
Unlikely. Pomegranate juice contains nutrients like vitamin C, folate, and potassium, which contribute to general health, but there is no strong evidence suggesting it can specifically strengthen the uterine lining. Some animal studies suggest that pomegranate seed extract (contains beta-sitosterol) may stimulate uterine activity and reduce contractions, but no clinical trials on humans have proven that pomegranate juice directly affects the uterine lining. The uterine lining’s health depends on hormones, particularly oestrogen and progesterone.
Moreover, a 2024 study found that pomegranate juice can relax the muscles of the uterus in rats, helping to reduce contractions. This could potentially help with conditions like preterm birth and painful periods. The study suggests pomegranate juice may be useful for treating uterine problems. But we need more research to understand how it works. Another study from 2022 found that pomegranate juice extract can help improve uterine damage in rats with PCOS, possibly by balancing hormones and reducing tissue damage. No clinical trials on humans have conclusively proven that pomegranate juice can have a direct impact on the uterine lining.
Does pomegranate juice balance hormones like progesterone and oestrogen?
No, pomegranates don’t directly regulate hormones. Hormonal balance is a complex process and the endocrine system controls it. While pomegranates contain phytoestrogens—plant compounds that mimic oestrogen—their effect on human hormone levels is minimal. Consuming pomegranate juice is unlikely to significantly impact progesterone or oestrogen levels. A 2022 study did suggest that pomegranate helped improve menopausal symptoms in 78 women, but we need more research to confirm these results. Most of the results, as of now, are inconclusive. While pomegranates are healthy, they shouldn’t replace medical treatments for hormonal imbalances.
We spoke with Shruti K Bhardwaj, Chief Clinical Nutritionist at Zydus Hospital, Ahmedabad, to get her perspective on pomegranate for hormonal balance in women. She explains, “Pomegranates are a great addition to your diet, packed with antioxidants and phytochemicals. While they don’t directly balance hormones, their nutrient-rich profile can support overall hormonal health. By reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, pomegranates may help maintain a more balanced hormonal system over time. Enjoying this fruit regularly as part of a balanced diet can offer several health benefits.”
Can pomegranate juice improve libido?
Not conclusively. There is no conclusive evidence linking pomegranate juice to improved libido. Pomegranates have long been associated with fertility and vitality in various cultures, and some studies suggest that pomegranate juice may improve blood flow, which could support sexual health. A 2012 study found that drinking pomegranate juice for two weeks increased testosterone levels by about 24% in both males and females, along with improvements in blood pressure and mood. However, this study was small, with only 60 participants, and lasted just two weeks, so we still need more research to confirm these findings. Libido depends on many factors, and pomegranate juice alone is unlikely to have a significant impact.
Dr Swati Dave, PhD in Food and Nutrition, shares her expertise on pomegranate juice for libido. She says, “Pomegranate juice can be a healthy addition to your diet, as it’s packed with antioxidants that support overall health. There’s no direct evidence linking pomegranate juice to a boost in libido. But its ability to improve blood flow and reduce oxidative stress may contribute to better overall vitality. Remember, a balanced diet, regular exercise, and managing stress are key factors for a healthy libido.”
Why is pomegranate considered a symbol of fertility?
The pomegranate’s association with fertility originates from ancient symbolism rather than scientific evidence. Its many seeds were seen as a representation of abundance and fertility in cultures like ancient Greece and Persia. It is a nutrient-dense fruit. However, its reputation as a fertility booster is more rooted in tradition than in proven medical benefits.
Apart from this, social media posts claim that pomegranate juice can cure constipation. But this is not true.
