  • Fact Check: This 5-year-old video shows a Maratha Kranti Morcha rally, NOT the MVA's recent march A video showing Maha Vikas Agadhi's recent protest march from December 17 is going viral that Devendra Fadnavis dubbed a 'Nano Morcha'.But the viral video has no link with the MVA's recent protest rally. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is more than five years old. On August 9, 2017, the Maratha Kranti Morcha staged a protest rally in Mumbai. This video shows that. Hundreds joined the Maha Vikas Aghadi’s Halla Bol rally on December 17, marching and raising slogans against the Eknath Shinde government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, rising prices, and more. The rally was led by Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly, the Nationalist Congress Party’s Ajit Pawar, and state president of the Indian National Congress Nana Patole. Many other leaders from these parties and other factions participated as well. Following the march, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called it a “nano morcha”, implying poor turnout at the rally. In retaliation, many on social media shared a short clip of what the rally allegedly looked like. People shared the video, where a sea of people could be seen marching on a flyover, with captions like, "This is the one, Devendra Fadnavis is trolling as Nano Morcha! This is the voice of Maharashtra lovers. Devendra ji. This behavior is not good. Jai Maharashtra!" On December 18, the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut also shared the same video on Twitter and wrote, "This is what Devendra Fadnavis is calling Nano Morcha! The loud voice of the loving people of Maharashtra. Devendra ji.. this behavior is not good. Jai Maharashtra!" The archived version of this tweet can be seen here. AFWA's investigation found that the video was on social media from 2017. In August 2017, the Maratha Kranti Morcha staged a protest rally in Mumbai, the shared video is from there. AFWA Probe A reverse search of the clip’s keyframes led us to the same video shared on Instagram. On August 9, 2017, on the same day, this clip was also posted on the Facebook group “Maratha Kranti Morcha Maharashtra”, which has almost three lakh followers. It was captioned, “J J Flyover Mumbai, Maratha Sagar.” We compared the two videos and found many similarities between them. Thus, it became clear that this video has been on social media since as early as August 2017. Subsequently, a keyword search online led us to media reports from the same time that contained similar videos and photos. On August 9, 2017, a similar video was posted by TOI Plus's Twitter account, with the caption, "#MarathaKrantiMorcha: The community members chanting slogans as they pass-by the JJ flyover." Other news outlets like the Financial Express, and Firstpost published reports that carried similar images. The news agency Associated Press also published a similar photo on August 9, 2017, with the description, "Members of Maratha Kranti Morcha or Maratha Revolutionary Front take out a silent march in Mumbai, India, Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017. Tens of thousands of people waving saffron flags are marching through Mumbai demanding quotas in government jobs and education for the Maratha community in western India." Thus, it is clear that the viral video has no link with the MVA’s recent protest rally. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
