  • Fact Check: This is NOT a Houthi attack! This clip is from 2020 This video from July 2020 shows a fire that broke out in a US aircraft carrier docked in San Diego. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video from July 2020 shows a fire that broke out in a US aircraft carrier docked in San Diego. Yemen's Houthi militants attacked two US missile destroyers on November 12 during their passage via the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait in the Arabian Sea. The attacks were not successful as US warships repelled them. Now, a video making the rounds online purports to show this attack. The video shows an aircraft carrier on fire. A Facebook user wrote, “Big blow on US, footage purportedly shows the aftermath of the Yemeni resistance attack on the American aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea, with multiple cruise missiles and drones.” Its archive can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that the viral video is from July 2020 when the US Navy warship USS Bonhomme Richard which was docked in San Diego for maintenance caught fire. Our Probe Responding to the viral post, several people claimed the video was old and showed a fire on a US Navy warship during routine maintenance at a San Diego base in 2020. The 27-second-long viral video comprises three different clips. A reverse search revealed the clip used in the first 13 seconds was uploaded to the official YouTube channel of the US Navy on July 14, 2020. It showed the air carrier USS Bonhomme Richard on fire at the San Diego Naval base during routine maintenance. The second clip used in the video also shows the USS Bonhomme Richard warship. We found this clip in a CBS Evening News report published in October 2021, which said there was a fire in San Diego in July 2020. As per the December 2020 FOX 5 San Diego video report, the third and last video was also from the same fire that broke out during maintenance on Bonhomme Richard on July 12, 2020, in San Diego. This proves that all the clips are of the same incident and from 2020. Thus, it’s clear this video does not show a Houthi attack. It’s also noteworthy that this particular fire incident has previously been shared as Houthi attacks on more than one occasion. You can read India Today’s fact-check stories on that here and here.
