  • A video showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing a crowd from a podium, which shows the Congress party's logo, has gone viral on social media. The claim: In the video, PM Modi is heard saying, "If you want the children of your family to prosper, then vote for Congress." At the time of writing this article, this video shared by Instagram page 'world_of_congress' was viewed more than 1,73,000 times. (Archives of more claims on social media can be seen here and here.) But..?: The video is edited. In the original video, PM Modi tells people to vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) if they wanted their children to prosper, and vote for the Congress if they wanted the Gandhi children to succeed. How did we find out?: Using keywords in Hindi, we looked for more details on PM Modi's speech. This led us to a YouTube video on Modi's verified YouTube channel, titled "....अगर आपको अपने बेटे- बेटी का भला करना हो तो BJP को वोट दीजिए " (If you want your sons and daughters to succeed, vote for the BJP). In this video, one can clearly see that the podium partially shows the BJP's logo and not Congress' party symbol. Addressing people in Madhya Pradesh's Bhopal, Modi spoke about people casting their votes for different parties hoping for better futures for their children and families. He said how no poor people wanted their children to be poor too, but wished for better futures. Modi said that people always cast their votes to parties who talk about improving futures for children and families, asking, "You have to give this careful thought and decide, whose improvement do you want to see?" He told the people, "If you want to improve the lives of the sons and daughters of the Gandhi family, then vote for Congress. If you want to see Mulayam Singhji's son to succeed, then vote for the Samajwadi Party. If you want to do good for the Lalu family's sons and daughters, vote for the RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal)." Adding to these examples, he mentioned more families in political parties, such as the Pawars in the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Abdullahs in the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, while also mentioning K Chandrasekhar Rao's Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam). "But listen to me carefully, my fellow Indians. Listen carefully. If you want your own sons and daughters, your own grandsons and granddaughters...if you want your family's children to prosper, then you should give your vote to the BJP." We also came across a livestream of the full event at Bhopal, which was an outreach programme for BJP workers to PM Modi ask questions ahead of the state's upcoming Assembly elections. The part of this video which was edited and shared in the claim starts at the 02:46:26 timestamp. Conclusion: An edited video of Prime Minister Modi's speech at an event for BJP workers in Madhya Pradesh is being shared to falsely claim that he asked people vote for Congress.
