  • Fact Check: Video of candlelight march in Bangladesh falsely linked to Kolkata rape-murder case India Today found that the video has nothing to do with the Kolkata rape-murder case. It's a clip from Bangladesh. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check While people in Kolkata indeed took out a candlelight protest for the rape-murder victim, this video has nothing to do with it. It is from Bangladesh. Many parts of Kolkata went dark on the evening of September 5 after the city’s residents turned off their lights and hit the streets with candles as a mark of protest against the rape-murder of the trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. A drone footage is now making the rounds on social media, claiming to show the same protest, a large gathering of people holding candles. An X user shared the video and wrote: “History has been created! The people of entire Kolkata took to the streets today. It is impossible to stop this movement until Tilottama gets justice. #RGKarProtest”. The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Amit Malviya also tweeted the same video and claimed that it showed the protest against the rape-murder of trainee doctor in West Bengal. He deleted the post later. India Today found that the video has nothing to do with Kolkata’s rape-murder case. It’s a video from Bangladesh. OUR PROBE With the help of reverse image search, we found the viral video on a YouTube channel named “ANICUR ROHOMAN M”. It was uploaded to the on August 11, 2024, much before Kolkata’s recent candlelight march. The Bangla title of the YouTube video suggests that it is from Bangladesh’s Uttara where people gathered in the memory of martyrs of 2024. The location mentioned in the description is also Bangladesh. A Bangladeshi Facebook user Nondontott also shared the video claiming it was shot on August 9 in Uttara in tribute to martyrs. Tamzid Islam Zihan, a Bangladeshi Instagram user, posted a higher-quality version of the same video on August 9 with the cation: “Candlelight vigil Uttara”. India Today reached out to Zihan who confirmed to us that he shot this video with his drone in Uttara, Bangladesh. We also found Bangladeshi news reports from August 9 and 10 regarding this candlelight march on YouTube. Citizens of Bangladesh joined this protest in memory of those people who were killed during students’ unrest in the country. Also, the background music in the viral video is not original but taken from a concert video of Bangladeshi musician Rahul Ananda. Thus, it’s clear that the viral video had nothing to do with protests in Kolkata. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
