  • Fact Check: 2016 video of stone pelting in Kerala shared with communal spin The video shows members of IUML attacking houses of CPI(M), Congress and BJP sympathisers over the murder of their party member, Muhammad Aslam. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This is a 2016 video from Kerala. It shows IUML workers attacking houses of CPI(M), Congress, and BJP sympathisers in retaliation to the murder of an IUML activist. A video of a group of men pelting stones has been circulating on social media. Allegedly, the video showed Muslim men in Kerala attacking Hindu houses, threatening them to vacate. The men in the video can be heard shouting slogans including “Allahu Akbar”. However, their target was not visible. “Muslim boys throwing stones on Hindu bungalows in Kerala threatening them to vacate, same like Kashmir situation is going to come in future,” claimed a Twitter user while sharing the video. The archived version of similar posts can be seen here, here, and here. India Today found that the video was from 2016 and it shows members of the Indian Union Muslim League members attacking houses of sympathisers of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Congress, and the Bharatiya Janata Party, over the murder of their party worker Muhammad Aslam. Our probe Reverse searching the viral clip’s keyframes led us to a 2016 video report by Manorama News that used the same footage. The report, published on August 15, 2016, was titled "More than 50 houses attacked in Nadapuram." According to the report, in a span of two days, IUML workers attacked more than 50 houses in Nadapuram, in the Kozhikode District of Kerala. The majority of the targeted houses belonged to sympathisers of the CPI(M), Congress, and the BJP. The attackers covered their faces during the assault. However, CCTV footage of the attack was collected by the police, leading to cases being registered against 50 individuals in connection with the incident. Per the report, the attack was in retaliation to the murder of IUML worker Muhammad Aslam, who was allegedly killed by CPI(M) workers on August 13, 2016. Aslam was an accused in the murder of a Democratic Youth Federation of India worker. He was acquitted during the trial and left for Dubai. However, he was killed when he returned to Kerala on vacation. The police arrested at least 11 individuals involved in this murder, including key accused Pathayakkunnil Vijesh and KK Sreejith. The same video was also shared by many CPI(M) workers and sympathisers on August 15, 2016. These posts also claimed the video showed IUML workers attacking houses. A few other CCTV footage of young men pelting stones at houses were also shared around the same time claiming to show IUML protests. It is, hence, clear that the video in question is from 2016 and shows IUML workers attacking houses of sympathisers from other political parties in retaliation for the murder of an IUML member.
