  • Fact Check: This video of train splashing water on commuters at Nalasopara station is from 2017 A video of a fast-pacing train spattering water at Nalasopara railway station in 2017 was shared as a recent incident amid heavy rainfall in Maharashtra. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video showed the Jaipur Superfast train spattering water on people at the Nalasopara station back in September 2017. While relentless rainfall battered several parts of northern India, heavy downpours also affected parts of Maharashtra, where a yellow alert was sounded by the India Meteorological Department on July 7. Now, a video of a train splashing water from the tracks on people waiting at a railway station is being widely shared. Allegedly, this video showed a recent incident at the railway station in Nalasopara, a town within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. One person shared the viral clip on Twitter along with the “Breaking News” hashtag, writing: “Mumbai's Nala Sopara railway station is more like water park.” India Today found that while this video is from Nalasopara, it dates back to 2017. Our Probe A reverse search of keyframes from the viral clip led us to a September 2017 tweet from BBC News that contained an extended version of the clip. The tweet read: “Speeding train soaks commuters waiting at a flooded station in Mumbai.” The video was credited to another Twitter user, who had shared it on September 20, 2017. Subsequently, we found several media reports about the incident. Per NDTV, this video was filmed on the outskirts of Mumbai at the Nalasopara Station. After the clip went viral, Railway officials reportedly denied that the train was moving at a high speed, claiming that it only seemed so because the video was shot up close. Another report from Hindustan Times added that this video was shot by a person waiting for the suburban local train. The train that drenched people with rainwater was the Jaipur Superfast, which was travelling at a speed of 110 kmph when it passed the flooded tracks of Nalasopara. The clip was reportedly shot at platform four of the station. As per reports, the Virar station master forgot to inform the driver that a caution had been issued for the trains to run at 8 kmph owing to heavy rainfall. As a result, the driver operated the train at full speed, splashing water on people on the platform, compromising their safety. Following the incident, Western Railway authorities reportedly suspended the Virar station master and the train’s pilot. A three-member committee was also formed to probe the incident. Thus, it is more than clear that a 2017 video of a train recklessly splashing water on people at the Nalasopara railway station was falsely shared as a recent one.
