India Today Fact Check
The viral videos show an older Israeli airstrike and are not related to the ongoing conflict.
In response to the recent infiltration by Palestinian militants from Gaza into southern Israel and the firing of thousands of rockets, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared, “We are at war.” Following the escalation, social media platforms are flooded with pictures and videos documenting the ongoing conflict.
A viral video showing a high-rise being wiped out is going viral on social media. A user sharing it wrote: "Israel announces 'Operation Iron Swords,' drafts tens of thousands, launches first major retaliatory Airstrike on Hamas Interior Ministry building (planned terror attack)."
The second viral video, showing airstrikes demolishing a multi-story building, is claimed to show Israel’s response to Hamas. Similar claims going viral can be seen here, here and here.
India Today found both videos to be old and unrelated to the ongoing Israel-Gaza Conflict.
Our Probe
A reverse search of keyframes from the first video led to the YouTube channel of Voice of America, where we found a similar video uploaded on May 13, 2023, titled "Israeli Strike Hits House in Northern Gaza." It reported that Islamic Jihad rebels had launched rockets towards southern Israel after the Israeli military bombed an apartment belonging to Islamic Jihad commander Mohammed Abu Al Atta.
Guardian News and AP Archive also carried a similar video at that time with the same information.
It is evident that the viral video showing an attack on Gaza by the Israeli military is not current but around four months old.
Similarly, a reverse search of keyframes from the second video led to a video uploaded on the video streaming website Daily Motion. The video was uploaded there two years ago.
Al Jazeera English, ABC News, and Middle East Eye also carried the viral video uploaded on May 12, 2021, as an Israeli bombing in Gaza.
According to several international media reports the Al-Shorouk Tower, a major media hub in one of Gaza’s busiest neighbourhoods, collapsed after being hit by missiles during airstrikes carried out by Israel Defence Force (IDF) in May 2021.
In conclusion, the viral video shows an Israeli airstrike in Gaza that is old and not related to the ongoing war.
