  • Fact Check: Does this video show lander of Chandrayaan-3? Nope, it's old and animated This video has been on the internet since March 25, 2022, and shows a simulation of a proposed NASA lunar mission that did not happen. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is old and 3D-animated. It shows a proposed NASA mission from the 90s that never happened. Days following the Indian Space Research Organisation’s much-celebrated Chandrayaan-3 launch on July 14, photos and videos of it are still being shared on social media. Though not all videos claiming to show the launch of the lunar mission are that. One such video making the rounds shows a spacecraft flying, all the while, heavier parts detaching from it. Sharing the video, a Facebook user wrote, “Chandrayaan 3 rocket lander.” India Today found that the video has been on the internet since March 25 2022, and is 3D-animated. OUR PROBE A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led us to a news report published on the website Auto Evolution on April 16 2022, which contained the longer version of the video. This already proved that the video could not have been that of Chandrayaan-3. Per the article, animation specialist “Hazegrayart” made the video and shared that on their YouTube channels on March 25, 2022. The video was titled, "NASA's Lunar Outpost Heavy Lift Vehicle: The Comet Rocket". In it, around the three and a half minutes mark, the viral clip could be seen. Per the video’s description on YouTube, "The Comet Rocket was a proposed super heavy-lift launch vehicle (HLLV) designed for NASA's First Lunar Outpost Program (FLO) from a 1992-1993 Space Exploration Initiative." We also found that the channel recently reshared the video as Shorts on July 15, 2023. We found many such spacecraft launching videos on this YouTube channel based in the United States. We also found the United States written on the spacecraft in the video. The First Lunar Outpost was a proposed mission that was part of former United States President George HW Bush’s Space Exploration Initiative. Despite a thorough proposal presenting plans for cheaper and better lunar missions, it never came to any fruition. The initiative ended with Bush Senior’s presidency and was shut down in March 1993. This makes it clear that the viral video does not even show a real lunar mission. India Today has reached out to Hazegrayart seeking more details about the viral video. This report will be updated as and when they respond. Thus, it’s clear that the video is old, animated, and does not show Chandrayaan-3 at all.
