India Today Fact Check
India's cricket body hasn't announced the introduction of a third cap. The stats section of the IPL website isn't keeping a tally of the best all-round performances in the way most runs and most wickets are counted for the Purple Cap and Orange Cap competitions. There is no official confirmation on the introduction of a third.
The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has reignited excitement across the country's cricketing frenzy. Just a few days into the tournament, a claim on social media captured the attention of fans.
The post stated that the BCCI has decided to introduce a third cap after the Orange and Purple ones—given to the highest run-getter and highest wicket-taker, respectively—for the leading all-rounder of the tournament. The new addition will be called the 'Mixed Cap". It will be half orange and half purple.

The India Today Anti Fake News War Room has found that the claim is misleading. The BCCI has not introduced a third cap to reward the best all-rounder in IPL 2022.

We started by running multiple keyword combinations on Google to retrieve any authentic information on the development. However, there was nothing to be found despite repeated tries.
We then searched the official websites of both the BCCI and IPL. Both have dedicated sections for news and announcements that are constantly updated. We learned that the last announcement regarding the franchise league was on media rights. The said report, inviting tender for media rights of the cash-rich league, was published on both sites on March 29.
While there have been no updates posted on this announcement on either website, there were no previous reports on the Mixed Cap either--we confirmed.
We proceeded to the social media handles next. Similar to the website, we found that the BCCI's latest tweet on the tournament was regarding the media rights of the IPL during the writing of this report.

We couldn't find any information on the Mixed Cap on the handles of BCCI secretary Jay Shah and president Sourav Ganguly either. It is highly unlikely for a development like this to be missed out on the official social media handles of the cricket body or its office bearers.
We went back to the IPL website once again to check the "Stats" section where the season figures and chart-toppers are listed. The IPL website hosts four subheads on the stats page: batting, bowling, MVP, and fairplay. There was no separate list of the best-performing all-rounders. If the league was officially tracking the top-performing all-rounders, it should have been listed here for transparency and other reasons.
For further clarity, we decided to take up the issue with the sports desk. India Today's sports team was able to confirm that there has been no official announcement from the BCCI about the introduction of a third cap. At our request, they checked with sources at the BCCI and confirmed that the claim is baseless.
Multiple sports journalists opined that such an announcement probably won't be made until after the season has begun. Such a major development is likely to be announced much in advance of the first game. While the Orange Cap and Purple Cap are pretty straight competitions, handed to the top scorer and top wicket-taker, the best all-rounder can't be judged that easily. It will take a whole bunch of rules based on which they can be compared.
Hence, there is no evidence to support the claim that the BCCI has announced a third "Mixed Cap" to honour the best performing all-rounder in IPL 2022.
