  • Fact Check: Putin didn't announce Russian support to Palestine India Today Fact Check found that this video was subtitled incorrectly to mislead people. In the original video, Putin spoke about the Russia-Ukraine war. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video was subtitled incorrectly. In the original video from 2022, Putin only spoke about the Russia-Ukraine war and not the Israel-Palestine issue. Amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, a video of Russian President Vladamir Putin began making the rounds on social media. In the video, Putin can be seen speaking in Russian. The video’s subtitles quote Putin saying: “America wants to destroy Israel. As we destroy Ukraine in past. I am warning America. Russia will help Palestine and America can do nothing.” Many shared the video on Twitter as “Breaking News”, sharing it with hashtags related to the Israel-Palestine war. The archived version of one such post can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that this video was subtitled incorrectly to mislead people. In the original video from 2022, Putin was speaking about the Russia-Ukraine war and not the Israel-Palestine issue. Our Probe A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led us to an extended version of the clip shared on VKontakte, a Russian social networking service, back in 2022. The caption of the post stated that the video was from a meeting between the Russian President and the country’s Human Rights Council. The post further listed select statements made by Putin during the meeting. These included Russia’s capture of new territories, Western human rights organisations’ treatment of Russia, and the threat of nuclear war among other statements — all broadly about the Russia-Ukraine war. Further searches led us to the original version of this video, shared on the YouTube channel of USA Today. The subtitles here in English indicated that Putin was talking about the growing threat of nuclear escalation in the context of the Russia-Ukraine war, nowhere mentioning the Israel-Palestine issue. Per the description, Putin stated that Russia’s nuclear arsenal was a “means of protection” which would be used as retaliation for an oncoming strike. The video of the meeting was also shared on the website of the Kremlin. According to it, this was from Putin’s annual meeting with the Council for the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights on December 7, 2022. We also found several news reports about this meeting from the time. According to them, Putin mostly spoke about Ukraine. The same was also corroborated by the transcripts of the meeting present on the Kremlin’s website. It’s noteworthy that Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov condemned violence against both Israelis and Palestinians on October 9. He, however, criticised the United States for supporting Israel, claiming that it was a “destructive approach” which ignored the need for an independent Palestinian state. However, it is more than clear that the viral video of Putin was wrongly subtitled to mislead people. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
