However, the drone did not sustain any damage and the incident is now under investigation. Now, a video allegedly showing missiles misfired from a German ship in the Red Sea has gone viral on social media. In it, one can see a large fireball erupting from a ship in the sea, followed by thick smoke. An X user shared the clip and wrote, “The German navy appears unprepared to engage with the Houthis in Yemen as evidenced by the malfunctioning missiles from their frigate exploding in the Red Sea prior to launch.” India Today found that this video is neither recent nor from the Red Sea. OUR PROBE We noticed that many people reacting to the video pointed out that this was the German ship Sachsen, which suffered a missile launch failure in 2018. A subsequent keyword search led us to a June 27, 2018, report by the US science and technology magazine Popular Mechanics. This report featured the same video and said that a German warship was damaged in a missile-firing incident off the Norwegian coast. News websites like Newsweek and Express also reported this incident in 2018 and carried screenshots from the viral video in their reports. Per Newsweek, this incident took place on June 21, 2018, when a failed missile launch ended up showering one of its frigates, the FGS Sachsen, with sparks and debris. Two sailors were injured in this incident and an investigation was launched to determine the cause of this failure. Thus, it’s clear that the video in question is being shared with false claims.
