The viral screenshot is edited. No such news report was published by Dainik Bhaskar in its April 13 edition. The newspaper itself has called the viral post fake.
With the first phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls just days away, a screenshot allegedly from the April 13 edition of the Hindi newspaper Dainik Bhaskar began making the rounds on social media. The front page in the viral screenshot claimed that a pre-poll survey predicted the INDIA bloc’s lead in 10 states and a washout of the National Democratic Alliance from the southern states.
Sharing the viral screenshot, a Facebook user wrote, “Dainik Bhaskar-Nelson Survey: In 10 states INDIA alliance is leading & could cross 200 in these 10 states alone. Even in the Hindi heartland states, Modi's image is not enough to get votes for the BJP. NDA is looking at washout from Bihar, Bengal & Maharashtra. #BJPbelow180”. The archive of the viral post can be seen here.
The X account called “Spirit Of Congress” also shared the viral screenshot, which was viewed by over 80 thousand users at the time of writing this. Its archive can be seen here. The viral post was also shared by Congress leader Lakshmi Nair.
India Today Fact Check found that the viral screenshot is fake. No such news report was published by the Dainik Bhaskar in its April 13 edition.
Our Probe
We noticed the Hindi word “India” was misspelt in the viral screenshot. We also noticed that it showed the Bhopal edition of the Dainik Bhaskar published on April 13, 2024. We found the e-paper from the said date.
No election survey report was published on that date. Instead, a BJP advertisement and a report about Bhopal’s rainfall were on the front page. We also checked the front pages of all other editions of the Dainik Bhaskar but the viral survey report predicting the INDIA bloc’s lead was nowhere to be found. It was thus clear that the viral screenshot was morphed.
Looking at Dainik Bhaskar’s website and official social media accounts, we saw that the newspaper itself had called the screenshot fake.
On April 13, Dainik Bhaskar termed this survey fake in a report as well. In the images below, you can also see how the original April 13 front page was edited and the fake survey was inserted over it.
Has Dainik Bhaskar reported any such survey?
The Dainik Bhaskar has not released any pre-poll survey report along with Nelson. However, the paper released its first survey results on April 14. The survey called “Mera Vote Meri Marzi” was carried out in 308 Lok Sabha seats in 12 states. It concluded that 48 per cent of voters want to re-elect Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and 37 per cent are not happy with increasing unemployment. This survey does not predict any lead of the INDIA bloc in 10 states as claimed in the viral screenshot.
It is thus clear that the viral screenshot attributed to Dainik Bhaskar is fake.
