  • Fact Check: Did Ronaldo declare support for Palestine? Nope, this clip is old This is a 2016 video of Cristiano Ronaldo talking about children affected by the conflict in Syria. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This is a 2016 video of Cristiano Ronaldo talking about children affected by the conflict in Syria. A video of footballer Cristiano Ronaldo allegedly showing support to Palestine amid Israel’s siege of Gaza has been widely shared on social media. In the video, the Portugal star footballer can be heard saying, “We know that you have been suffering a lot. I am a very famous player but you are the true heroes. Do not lose your hope. The world is with you. I care about you and I am with you.” Sharing the video on X, a social media user wrote, “Ronaldo speaks on behalf of innocent children of Palestine & Gaza.” Similar posts can be seen here and here. India Today found that this video was old and that Ronaldo’s message for children affected by the conflict in Syria in 2016. Our Probe A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led to the official Instagram account of the footballer, where we found the same video shared on December 23, 2016, captioned: "A message of hope to the children affected by the conflict in Syria." He also shared the same video on his official Facebook and Twitter accounts. International news outlets like Marca, the Washington Post, and The Sun also reported the news in 2016. We found no news reports online indicating if Ronaldo had made any public statement in support of Palestine. However, we found that the same video went viral in 2021 with the same claim. At the time, AFP debunked it. Also, in the wake of the Israel-Hamas conflict, a video allegedly showing Ronaldo waving the Palestinian flag went viral. You can read our fact-check of that here. Thus, it is clear that the viral video was shared with a false claim. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
