Rescue operations are in full swing as floods and landslides continue to wreak havoc in Himachal Pradesh. Reports indicate that nearly 40,000 stranded tourists and locals have already been evacuated so far. Amid the ongoing crisis in the state, a video of a collapsing multi-storey building is being widely circulated on social media. Allegedly the incident, took place on July 12 in the Kachighati area of Shimla in Himachal Pradesh, following heavy rainfall. The archived version of one such post can be seen here. India Today found that the video is from a 2021 incident in Shimla and is not related to the recent floods. Our Probe With the help of a keyword search, we found multiple videos of the building’s collapse shared by media organisations and social media users in 2021. A video of the collapse captured from a different angle was shared by the All India Radio News on its Facebook page on September 30, 2021. According to AIR News, the multi-storey building collapsed at Ghoda Chowki in the Kachighati area of Shimla because of a landslide on September 30, 2021. Fortunately, no casualties were reported as the building was reportedly vacant at the time of the incident. However, the district administration mentioned that the residents' belongings were damaged in the incident. According to India Today, cracks began appearing in the eight-storey building in the morning of September 30, 2021, after which the building was vacated. According to the Hindustan Times, two adjacent buildings were also affected by the collapse. The report indicated that a notice had been issued to the occupants to vacate the building two weeks prior, and eight families had already been relocated to a safer place. The incident was also reported by media outlets like ANI and NDTV. It was hence clear that the video in question is approximately two years old and is not related to the recent floods in Himachal Pradesh.
