  • Fact Check: Heartwarming pic of child rescuing puppy is NOT related to recent Kakhovka dam attack in Ukraine Was this photo of a puppy being rescued by a child taken after the recent attack on the Kakhovka dam? Our probe suggests otherwise. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This image is at least ten years old, and has been on the internet since as early as 2013. Thousands of villagers in a Russian-controlled region of southern Ukraine are stuck in a flood-like situation after the Nova Kakhovka dam was breached on June 6. Following that, several social media users shared a heartwarming photo of a child rescuing a puppy in a waterlogged area. While sharing this image, many claimed this was an outcome of the recent dam breach in southern Ukraine. “Young Ukrainian boy rescuing his dog from drowning after Russia destroyed the Kakhovka dam today,” claimed several Facebook posts. The archived version of a similar post can be seen here. India Today Fact Check, however, has found that the image is at least ten years old and unrelated to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Our Probe A reverse search of the viral image in Yandex took us to a YouTube video featuring the same picture in its thumbnail. This video was uploaded to the verified channel of "People's Slavic Radio" on September 11, 2021, making it evident that the image in question could not be related to the recent incident. Another search with suitable keywords led us to a tweet posted by a person called Miguel Cunillera from May 20, 2014, that featured the same image. In Spanish, the tweet read, "Image of a Serbian boy, saving his puppy during the floods." With the help of this post, we found multiple blog posts, websites, and fundraising websites that contained the same image claiming that it was captured during the 2014 Serbia flood. In May 2014, a cyclone affected a large area of Southeastern and Central Europe, causing floods and landslides in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Reportedly, these two countries received the heaviest rainfall in 120 years resulting in massive floods that killed over 20 people. However, we also found a Croatian news report that debunked this image. It said that it was not shot during the aforementioned floods and that it had been on the internet since 2013 at least. Although we could not independently pinpoint the location or date of this photograph, it is certain that the image is not related to the dam breach in southern Ukraine.
