  • Fact Check: This OLD video of Hardik Pandya mischievously edited with Rohit Sharma chants Amid fans urging Rohit Sharma be reinstated as Mumbai Indians captain, this video has been widely shared. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The video is three years old and was edited to add the Rohit Sharma chants. The Mumbai Indians franchise courted controversy after trading Rohit Sharma for Hardik Pandya in the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League, with Pandya replacing Sharma as captain. Sharma successfully led the team to a record five victories in the T20 league since assuming leadership in 2013. This decision sparked an intense meltdown online, with fans urging the reinstatement of Sharma as the team captain. Amidst this, a video going viral on social media shows Hardik Pandya getting down from his car at what appears to be an airport. In the background, chants of "Mumbai Cha Raja, Rohit Sharma" (Rohit Sharma is Mumbai's king) can be heard. Those sharing this video asserted that Rohit Sharma's fans were chanting this in front of Pandya. One X user, sharing the video, wrote, "People are shouting 'Mumbai Cha Raja Rohit Sharma' in front of Hardik Pandya. Rohit Sharma is an emotion of India. SHAMELESS MUMBAI INDIANS." The Free Press Journal also reported on the viral video with a similar narrative. India Today found that the viral video dates back to January 2020 and has been edited. The slogan was added later. OUR PROBE A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led us to a photo set in paparazzo Viral Bhayani's Instagram account. This post from January 21, 2020, featured photos of Sara Ali Khan, Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Hardik Pandya, Shraddha Kapoor, and Shahid Kapoor. Pandya’s photo seemed to match the viral clip. This hinted that the video was old. A further search took us to a Lokmat Hindi report from the same period, featuring the viral video. No such slogans eulogising Rohit Sharma could be heard in the video in the report. Moreover, we traced the slogans heard in the viral video back to another YouTube video dated January 18, 2020, two days before the video of Hardik Pandya was shot at Mumbai's airport. Thus, it’s evident that an old video of Hardik Pandya was edited to add slogans extolling Rohit Sharma. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
