  • Fact Check: This clip of Aus players drinking from a shoe is NOT from WC23 final The viral video of the Australian cricket team drinking from a shoe actually shows a celebration from 2021. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is not recent. It shows the Australian team celebrating its victory over New Zealand in the 2021 T20 World Cup. A controversial photo of Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh sitting with his feet on the ICC World Cup trophy has caused a storm online. Now, another alleged post-final celebration of the Australian team is making the rounds on social media. The video shows men donning Australian cricket team jerseys pouring drinks into a shoe and drinking it. One person shared the clip writing: “Australian team celebration after winning icc world cup 2023.” An archived version of one such post can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that this video of the Australian cricket team is from 2021. WHAT OUR PROBE 'SHOE-D'? With the help of a keyword search, we found an ANI report from November 15, 2021, containing a screenshot from the viral video. According to it, the clip showed Australian players Matthew Wade and Marcus Stoinis celebrating their maiden T20 World Cup triumph by drinking from a shoe. This video was reportedly shot in Australia’s dressing room and was shared by the International Cricket Council. Further, we also found a tweet from the official Twitter account of the International Cricket Council dated November 15, 2021. It is noteworthy that the original video had a logo of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 in the top-right corner. This logo was, however, blurred or hidden by emojis by those sharing the clip now as a recent celebration. Back in 2021, several media outlets reported about this video, showing the Australian squad’s unique celebration after defeating New Zealand in the final, held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The act was termed “disgusting” by former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar at the time. 'SHOEY': AN AUSSIE TRADITION Per reports, drinking from a shoe, called “the Shoey” is a popular way of celebrating in Australia. The act reportedly came to light after an Australian Formula One driver Daniel Ricciardo drank champagne off of his racing boots after finishing on the podium in the 2016 German Grand Prix. Since then, several sportspersons, television stars and even singers have done a Shoey. Thus, it is more than clear that an old video of Australian cricketers drinking off of a shoe was falsely shared as recent.
