India Today Fact Check
This is a made-up quote. About the controversial catch, Alex Carey said that "the right decision was made."
Australia vanquished India at the Oval in London in the 2023 ICC World Test Championship final, and in its aftermath, there has been much debate about Shubman Gill's dismissal in the second innings. Gill was batting on 18 when he edged Scott Boland low to the left of the gully, where Cameron Green dived to take the catch extremely close to the ground.
The decision was referred to the third umpire, who determined it was an out. Of course, many fans have contended against this decision. Adding fuel to this fiery debate now is a purported quote from Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey.
"Greeny knew he didn't pick it up cleanly, he told me he might have picked it up from the ground but guess we got lucky with the TV ump [sic] there," Carey allegedly said according to posts widely shared on Facebook and Twitter. An archived version of such a post can be seen here.
India Today, however, found that the quote was made-up. Carey never said this. In fact, he said something to the contrary.
Our Probe
Multiple searches with various keywords did not lead us to any reports about Carey making such a comment. However, we found an ANI report from June 11, the final day of the test match, quoting Carey saying that the TV umpire made the right decision.
"Looked good to me. We were happy and the right decision was made,” Carey reportedly said when asked about the catch. A report from Sportskeeda also said the same. We also found a tweet made by cricket expert Mufaddal Vohra, with the same quote from Carey from June 10, a day before the test match ended.
Next, we looked for the visual evidence of Carey saying the same and came across it in the repeat telecast of the fourth day of the test match available on Hotstar.
When asked what's his take on Cameron Green's catch after the play of day four, Carey said, "I thought he caught it fair in the square. It looked good from where I was. He was really happy with it. So, yeah, I think the right decision was made."
Thus, it is clear that the quote in circulation is completely made up.
