This video is from August 2019 and shows activist Piyush Manush being beaten up by the BJP cadre for barging into their Salem office.
Controversy over alleged traces of beef tallow, fish oil, and lard (pig fat) in the ghee used to make laddus at the Sri Venkateswara temple in Tirupati reached the apex court on September 20 after a lawyer filed a plea alleging that the act violated fundamental Hindu religious customs.
Amid this, a video began making the rounds on social media featuring crowd hitting a man, allegedly for mocking Hindus over the Tirupati row. Those sharing the clip identified the victim as Piyush Manush, adding that he released a video titled, “Beef laddu for all Hindus delivered by Perumal himself” following which people in Tamil Nadu’s Salem beat him up.
One person shared the video on Facebook writing, “Piyush Manush, the guy who mocked Hindus with a video titled ‘Beef Laddoo for all Hindus delivered by Perumal himself’ has got a better treatment at Salem, Tamil Nadu. Good resistance.”
India Today Fact Check, however, found that this video is from August 2019, and shows a pro-congress Tamil Nadu activist being beaten up by the Bharatiya Janata Party cadre for barging into the party’s Salem office.
Our Probe
With the help of a keyword search, we found an extended version of the video in question, shared on a YouTube channel named “NewsGlitz Tamil” on August 28, 2019. The channel logo and watermark were present in the viral clip. Its description stated that Piyush Manush was assaulted at the BJP office.
We then found multiple media reports about this incident. A Tamil Nadu activist Piyush Manush was reportedly attacked at the BJP office in Salem on August 28, 2019. He suffered minor injuries and was admitted to the Salem Government Hospital.
Manush, an environmental activist, was reportedly vocal against many government schemes and corporate initiatives across Tamil Nadu. Per reports, Manush went to the Salem BJP office to seek views of the leaders on the economy, Kashmir crisis, and confront them about threats that he allegedly received from the BJP.
BJP leaders, in turn, accused Manush of evading taxes and spreading hatred against Hindus. The heated argument ended with BJP workers garlanding Manush with slippers and beating him up.
Police reportedly received complaints about this incident from both sides. The issue also triggered outrage on social media, with Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam President (and now Tamil Nadu Chief Minister) MK Stalin condemning the attack on Manush, and the BJP demanding Manush’s arrest for entering party office without permission.
In a Facebook post, dated August 28, 2019, Manush stated that he would visit the BJP office in the evening. Later, he live-streamed his visit, capturing the heated argument with the BJP workers. On September 21, 2024, he also debunked the viral clip in circulation, stating it is from 2019.
It is noteworthy, that Piyush Manush has indeed made a video about “Beef laddoo” at Tirupati on September 19, 2024. However, the viral clip has nothing to do with the Tirupati row.
