  • Last Updated on October 6, 2023 by Neelam Singh Quick Take A social media post claims that the application of potato juice prevents hair loss. We fact-checked and found this claim to be Mostly False. The Claim An Instagram post titled, “Did you know?” reads, “Best hack to prevent hair loss. Take one potato, crush it and strain its juice, Apply this juice to your scalp and the length of your hair. Leave it for 30 minutes and then rinse with water. Follow with regular shampoo and conditioner.” Fact Check What causes hair loss? Hair loss can result from a range of factors. Genetic predisposition, such as androgenic alopecia, is a common cause, while hormonal changes due to pregnancy, thyroid issues, and medical conditions like alopecia areata can also lead to hair loss. Medications, particularly those for cancer and other conditions, as well as radiation therapy, can trigger hair loss, as can stressful events or hairstyles that strain hair follicles. Poor nutrition, aging, and autoimmune diseases are additional contributors. It’s crucial to recognize that some hair loss is a natural part of life, while other types can be managed or treated. Can potato juice prevent hair loss? Not exactly. There is no substantial scientific evidence to support the idea that potato juice can effectively prevent hair loss. While potato juice contains vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that could potentially promote hair health, there are no definitive studies demonstrating its effectiveness in preventing or treating hair loss. Potatoes are a good source of vitamins B, C, and E, which are all essential for healthy hair growth. They also contain potassium, which can help to regulate oil production on the scalp and prevent dandruff, a common cause of hair loss. In addition, the starch in potatoes can help to remove excess oil from the scalp and follicles, which can create an environment that is more conducive to hair growth. The vitamin C in potatoes can also help to boost collagen production, which is important for maintaining strong and healthy hair. However, more research is needed to confirm the efficacy of potato juice in preventing hair loss. Additionally, research shows that patatin, an essential compound of raw potatoes, can harm the skin. Patatin in raw potato can cause allergies. The signs of an allergic reaction to raw potatoes include redness and/or swelling of the skin, itching, hives, itchy or runny nose, difficulty in breathing, wheezing and rarely, anaphylaxis (a life-threatening condition). Dr Sachin Gupta, MBBS (AIIMS Delhi), MD Dermatology & Venereology (AIIMS Delhi), Dermatologist at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad states, “There is a lot of misinformation circulating on the internet and social media regarding hair and skin problems. There is no scientific evidence to support the use of potatoes for hair growth. In fact, there is some evidence to suggest that potatoes can actually damage hair. Some individuals may have experienced a temporary increase in hair growth after using potatoes. However, it is important to remember that correlation does not equal causation. Just because two things happen at the same time doesn’t mean that one caused the other. Also, potatoes contain certain nutrients that are beneficial for hair health. For example, potatoes are a good source of vitamin C, which is essential for collagen production (a protein that helps to keep hair strong and healthy). However, it’s important to note that you can get all the nutrients you need for hair health from a balanced diet. There is no need to use potatoes on your hair specifically to improve hair growth. In fact, there is some evidence to suggest that using potatoes on your hair may actually be harmful as it contains solanine, a compound that can be toxic if ingested in large quantities. Also, potato starch can dry out hair and make it brittle.” There is another study which states that patatin in raw potato sensitivities could also cause latex allergies in adults. Also, certain causative agents of hair loss, such as genes, and autoimmune disorders cannot be treated by any external application. What can be the dangers of using home remedies and not seeking medical advice? Attempting to treat hair loss with home remedies without seeking medical advice can lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment of underlying medical conditions causing hair loss. It also risks ineffective or potentially harmful treatments, worsening the condition. Home remedies to treat hair fall or loss don’t necessarily cause problems for most people. Commonly used home remedies are not harmful to the scalp or hair. But some people can be allergic to raw ingredients. Allergic reactions often go on their own. However, it is better to consult a doctor if the symptoms last longer than expected. Dr. Gupta further states, “It is important to be cautious of random advice that you encounter online. Just because something is written on the internet doesn’t mean that it’s true. In reality, most of these recommendations lack effectiveness and at times, can be even harmful. They can lead to a waste of time, resources and money,) resulting in a delay in proper evaluation in treatment. Hair growth is a complex process influenced by genetics, hormones, diet, and overall health. There’s no single food or thing that can make your hair grow super-fast overnight. If you are looking for ways to promote hair growth, it is important to focus on evidence-based treatments. There are multiple over-the-counter and prescription medications that are effective for hair loss. You should talk to your dermatologist about any underlying medical conditions contributing to your hair loss. Instead of believing in these myths, it is smarter to prioritize a well-balanced diet, good hair care practices, and consulting a dermatologist if you are really worried about your hair growth.” How to prevent hair loss? Hair loss prevention involves maintaining a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients like vitamins and minerals, while also prioritizing scalp health through gentle hair care, regular cleaning, and avoiding harsh styling practices. Managing stress, addressing underlying medical conditions, and being mindful of medication side effects is crucial. Minimizing excessive hair treatments, maintaining a healthy lifestyle with exercise, proper sleep, and hydration, and quitting smoking can also contribute to hair health. Consulting a dermatologist or healthcare professional is recommended for personalized guidance, as while these practices can promote healthy hair, some causes of hair loss are unavoidable due to genetics or medical factors.
