  • FACT CHECK: Does This Video Show Chinese Dancing Robots? A video shared on Facebook purportedly shows Chinese robots performing a ballroom dance routine. Verdict: False The video shows a pair of contestants performing a waltz during a dance competition show in the U.K. Fact Check: Dancing robots have been used for entertainment in Japan. The Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks baseball team placed over 20 dancing robots in the stands during a July game in lieu of fans due to COVID-19 restrictions, according to Reuters. Social media users have shared a video that they claim shows Chinese robots ballroom dancing, with captions attempting to compare the alleged robots in the video to Japanese dancing robots. (RELATED: Does This Video Show The Fireworks Display Meant For The Tokyo Olympics?) One such caption reads, “This classical dance was created in China and broadcast at Shanghai Disneyland. They are not dance artists, but robots made in China. The performance time is only about 5 minutes, but the waiting time for tickets is 4 hours, and the ticket price is 499 yuan.($75) It is more complex than Japan’s, and has perfect facial expressions. Both dancers are robots. They look so real that they cannot be distinguished from actual people.” The dancers, however, are human. The BBC posted the video on YouTube in December 2013 with the title “Abbey Clancy & Aljaz dance the Viennesse Waltz to ‘Delilah’ – Strictly Come Dancing – BBC One.” The people pictured in the video are model Abbey Clancy and professional dancer Aljaz Skorjanec. The pair won the dance competition show “Strictly Come Dancing” in 2013, according to The Guardian. The show airs on BBC One.
