  • Fact Check: Surreal photo of Pakistani girl with her snow leopard pet is AI-generated The viral photo was made using the AI tool Midjourney. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The photo is not real and is AI-generated. A photo of a young girl seated against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains alongside a snow leopard has been shared widely on social media. According to such posts, the girl’s name is Gulmina, and she hails from the Gilgit-Baltistan region in Pakistan. She purportedly raised the snow leopard since when it was a cub. A Facebook user while sharing the post wrote, “Gulmina, lives in Madan Tehsil of Shamshal area of Gilgit-Baltistan. She raised this snow leopard since it was a kitten, but now it is too big to live in her home. It lives in the mountains, but it still visits her and she still treats it like her pet.” India Today's fact-check found that the viral photo was generated using the AI tool Midjourney. OUR PROBE A reverse image search of the viral photo led us to the Instagram account "babrakk" which shared the same photo on March 24, 2024. The photo was captioned, "Shirin & her fierce companion. Making a great duo." We noticed that in the post's comments section, an Instagram user asked “How did you manage take this?” To this, the account responded with: “With Midjourney.” This made it clear that the photo was not real — it was AI-generated. The account also shared the viral posts on his Instagram story, addressing the viral narrative circulating on social media. He clarified the surreal nature of the image was only possible with the help of the AI tool Midjourney and also acknowledged Nvidia's technology for its contribution. We also noticed that this account has shared several similar photos of children in the mountains accompanying wild animals. It's important to note that there is no administrative division known as Madan Tehsil in the Gilgit-Baltistan region. Snow leopards, however, are found in alpine and subalpine zones at elevations of 3,000-4,500 m. Their habitats span from eastern Afghanistan, through the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau, extending to southern Siberia, Mongolia, and western China. Thus, it’s clear that the viral photo showing a young girl and a snow leopard is a product of an artificial intelligence tool.
