  • FACT CHECK: Video Of Canadians Celebrating Trudeau’s Resignation Is AI-Generated A video shared on X purports to show Canadians celebrating Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation. 🚨BREAKING: Canadians are celebrating the news of Justin Trudeau’s resignation by re-creating the iconic hot tub party in front of Parliament Hill.#JustinTrudeau pic.twitter.com/IVIs9NOfbJ — Ajam saifi (@AjamSaifi0) January 6, 2025 Verdict: False The video has been created with artificial intelligence (AI) and was shared on X by a self-proclaimed meme account. An AI expert confirmed the video was not authentic in an email to Check Your Fact. Fact Check: Trudeau recently announced his resignation as Canada’s Prime Minister, according to BBC News. Trudeau, who faced pressure to quit his role, said he will stay in office until his Liberal Party chooses his replacement, the outlet reported. The X video purports to show Canadians celebrating Trudeau’s resignation. In the video, a large group of people appear to participate in an outdoor gathering that features a hot tub. “BREAKING: Canadians are celebrating the news of Justin Trudeau’s resignation by re-creating the iconic hot tub party in front of Parliament Hill,” the video’s caption reads. The claim is false. The video was created with AI and was shared on X by @DrClownPhD, a self-proclaimed meme account. The account describes itself as sharing “Trustworthy fake news & memes” via its bio. The original post shared by the account on Jan. 6 has garnered over 600,000 views as of writing. Likewise, Check Your Fact performed a content detection scan using the website, “TrueMedia.org,” and the results indicate the video shows “some evidence of manipulation.” In addition, Trudeau does not appear to have publicly commented on the claim via his website or on his verified social media accounts. (RELATED: Is Video Of Police Related To The Recent Christmas Market Attack In Germany?) Check Your Fact also found no credible news reports to support the claim. Actually, the opposite is true. On Jan. 9, Misbar debunked the video, indicating it was AI-generated. Furthermore, Dr. Walter Scheirer, an AI expert at the University of Notre Dame, confirmed the video was not authentic in an email to Check Your Fact. “This is a very poor quality AI-generated video. Most of the people and objects depicted are distorted and morph in highly unnatural ways. Further, objects appear out of nowhere as the video progresses. For instance, the man second-from-left in the hot tub produces a beer out of thin air at the 3-second mark. In another example, the maple leaf in the Canadian flag changes orientation at the 3-second mark,” Scheirer said.
