India Today Fact Check
The viral video predates Iran’s attack on Israel. It has been on the internet since early 2023 and shows a Russian attack on a Ukrainian military airbase.
More than 300 drones and missiles were part of Iran’s April 14 attack on Israel, the country’s largest-ever conventional show of force. While most of the projectiles were reportedly intercepted outside Israel’s borders with help from the US, the UK, and France, at least nine Iranian missiles struck two air bases. One of them was the Nevatim Air Base, where officials said a C-130 transport aircraft, an unused runway, and empty storage facilities were damaged.
Now a video allegedly showing the Nevatim Air Base’s condition following the attack is being widely shared. An X user wrote, “Iran Ballistic missiles destroyed Nevatim base of Israel. F-35 also destroyed.” Its archive can be seen here.
India Today Fact Check found that the viral video has been on the internet since early 2023 and likely shows a Russian attack on Ukraine.
Our Probe
A reverse search of screengrabs from the viral video led us to the same video uploaded to the YouTube channel “Bulgarian Military” on February 20, 2023. The video titled, “Russia Destroys MiG-29 Fleet” has been viewed over 60,000 times. People in the video could also be heard speaking in Russian.
We also found this video in several media reports published in February 2023. One report said that a MiG-29 fleet of the Ukrainian Air Force was destroyed in a Russian missile attack at an airbase in the summer of 2022.
A closer look at the viral video also revealed that the fighter jets in it do not look like F-35s but like the Russian-made MiGs. Notably, the Israeli Air Force has no MiG fighter jet fleet. As per Vietnam Daily’s report which featured screengrabs of the video says, at least 10 Ukrainian fighter jets were damaged in the Russian raid.
Several video reports on YouTube also claimed this video to be of a Russian raid on the Vasylkiv Military Airbase. Reportedly, Vasylkiv Air Base is home to 35 Ukrainian MiG 29 fighter planes. We searched online using relevant keywords and found many news reports on the Russian attack on Vasylkiv airbase in 2022.
Thus, it’s more than clear that an old video from the Russia-Ukraine war was falsely shared as the recent Iran attack on Israel.
