  • Fact Check: NOT Rahul's Nyay Yatra in Maharashtra, this clip shows bullock cart race in Karnataka India Today Fact Check found that the viral clip is not from Rahul Gandhi's rally. Instead, it is from a bullock cart race on March 5 in Karnataka. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The video is not from Rahul Gandhi’s rally. Instead, it is from a bullock cart race on March 5 in Karnataka. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra concluded in Mumbai’s Dharavi on March 16. In its aftermath, a video of a huge crowd, allegedly from Gandhi’s rally in Maharashtra, was shared by many on social media platforms. A Facebook user shared the viral clip and wrote, “Crowd at #RahulGandhi’s rally in Maharashtra, now.” Its archive can be seen here. Additionally, the viral clip was shared on the official Facebook page of Uttarakhand Congress. The caption read, “Rahul Gandhi’s first big rally after the #ElectoralBondScam expose.” Its archive can be seen here. The video was also shared by a news platform called "Molitics India", claiming it to be from Maharashtra. India Today Fact Check found that the viral clip is not from a Rahul Gandhi rally. It is from a bullock cart race from March 5 in Karnataka. OUR PROBE By performing a reverse search on screengrabs from the viral video, we found a similar video uploaded to YouTube on March 11. The video was also shared on Instagram on March 10. In this video, a bullock cart could be seen trampling people as it moved. The caption along with these videos claimed they showed a bullock cart race. This suggested that the viral clip may not have been related to Rahul Gandhi’s Maharashtra rally because the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra entered the state on March 12. These videos also featured a huge poster of a man, which was also visible in the viral clip. Upon comparison, it became clear that these videos were from the same place. We then found the viral video in an Instagram post from March 5, shared by a person called Abhijeet Kalage. We contacted Kalage, who told us he shot this video the same day at a bullock cart race in Karnataka’s Belagavi district. Kalage, who hails from Maharashtra’s Kolhapur district, which borders Karnataka’s Belagavi district, mentioned that a bull named Haranya from his region was announced as the winner. India Today’s Kolhapur correspondent Deepak Suryavanshi confirmed that the viral video was from Chikodi village in Karnataka’s Belagavi district. The race was organised on March 5 on Congress MLA Prakash Hukkeri’s birthday. We then spoke to Sachin Patil, the winning bull’s owner. He told India Today that the race was organised by Prakash Hukkeri’s son Ganesh Hukkeri. After Haranya won the race, Patil was awarded Rs 17 lakh. He also told us that the man in the poster in the viral video was Ganesh Hukkeri. Patil also sent us a few photos of the race which can be seen below. A Belagavi-based news portal live-streamed the whole programme. The video can be seen below. We spotted many similarities between this video and the viral one, including the aforementioned poster. Thus, it is clear that the viral video is not from Rahul Gandhi’s Maharashtra rally but from a bullock cart race in Karnataka.
