India Today Fact Check
The two incidents are not related to each other. The cattle torture video was shared as early as March this year. The video of police violence is from 2021.
Two disturbing videos, one showing a man torturing cattle and another showing atrocities, juxtaposed side by side, have gone viral. Those sharing the videos have claimed this was the Uttar Pradesh police taking action against a person who tortured cattle.
On Twitter and Facebook, people cheered the police under UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s rule had caught the man who had strangled cattle in eight days.
AFWA’s investigation found that the two incidents were not related to each other. The police atrocity video is from 2021 and is not related to cattle torture.
AFWA Probe
Upon reverse-searching frames of the videos, we found that the first video was shared on social media as early as March this year. At the time, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals or PETA, the animal rights organisation, enquired about the incident on Twitter.
The second video, showing police violence, was fact-checked by AFWA earlier this year, when it surfaced on social media along with a different misleading claim. You can read the report here.
As per the news reports, this incident is from May, 2021 and took place in UP’s Chandauli district. Following an allegation of theft, the local police chowki in-charge Shivanand Verma and constable Dilip Kumar reached the spot and brutally thrashed two suspects.
The video of the violence was caught on camera and went viral. According to the Chandauli police, the two personnel were suspended after a departmental inquiry. This incident went viral last year with the claim that cops thrashed the man in the video for chanting pro-Pakistani slogans. The Chandauli Police refuted the viral claim at the time as well.
So, it’s clear that an incident from 2021 was falsely linked to a video of animal torture.
