India Today Fact Check found that the video is from Vietnam. Our Probe Many responded to the viral post claiming the video was not from Bengaluru but from Vietnam. A reverse search on the viral video’s keyframes led us to a post dated October 15, 2024. It read: “This is what happened when lightning struck a powerline causing it to fall into floodwater. Can Tho in Vietnam.” Further searches led us to several news reports about this video from October 16. As per CafeF, a Vietnam-based news channel, the video is from October 14, when heavy rain lasting nearly two hours caused deep flooding in the streets of the central area of Can Tho City, causing power disruptions in many households. During this time, a high-voltage electrical wire broke and fell onto a waterlogged road. Fearing danger from the sparking flames, many passers-by turned their vehicles away while many drove through nearby despite it getting bigger. A VietnamPlus report published on October 16 claimed the incident took place in the southern Vietnamese city of Can Tho. We found several news reports saying there were heavy rains in Can Tho on October 14, after which streets were flooded, causing heavy traffic jams in the area. Notably, several parts of Bengaluru are facing waterlogging due to heavy rains. We, however, could not find any news report detailing an incident like the one seen in the viral video.
