  • Fact Check: Viral NDTV poll predicting Congress victory in Telangana is FAKE NDTV Poll of Polls is an exit poll that is announced after the conclusion of elections. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The viral screenshot is photoshopped. NDTV has called it out on its social media. With the Telangana Assembly elections just days away, social media has been inundated with myriad opinion polls projecting which party might rule the southern state. An NDTV chart, purportedly showing outcomes projected by multiple opinion polls, has gone viral. The alleged opinion poll forecasts a landslide victory for the Congress party. Congress supporters and even party spokesperson Supriya Shinate shared the figures projected in this infographic. A Facebook user while sharing the NDTV chart, wrote, "BREAKING NOW - NDTV Poll of Polls gives Majority to Congress in TELANGANA." An archived version of the post can be seen here. India Today found that the viral screenshot is fake. NDTV's Poll of Polls is actually an exit poll that is released once the voting concludes. OUR PROBE A keyword search for NDTV's Poll of Polls for the Telangana assembly elections in 2023, yielded no results, raising suspicions about the chart's authenticity. A thorough advanced search on X using relevant keywords also failed to reveal any such an opinion poll. We also scrutinised NDTV’s recent posts on X and found that the media organisation had explicitly debunked the viral screenshot, labelling it as "Fake.” In a tweet, NDTV clarified, "Fake News Alert | NDTV has not carried any poll of polls for Telangana 2023. Please don’t spread fake news." Contrary to its claims of being an opinion poll, Poll of Polls is an exit poll, which is generally announced immediately after the conclusion of the last phase of voting. However, the alleged poll by NDTV went viral two days before Telangana is scheduled to vote — November 30. It's pertinent to note that the Election Commission from time to time issues notifications prohibiting the conduct and publication of exit polls from the commencement of polls until half an hour after it is over. In conclusion, NDTV's alleged opinion poll did not project a sweeping victory for the Congress party in Telangana, as the viral graphic is fake.
