It’s from Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur and dates back to February 2022. Ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections slated for November 20, a video showing a group of men at a residential society holding saffron flags and sloganeering in support of Lord Ram and Hindus was widely shared on social media. Residents standing on the balconies of their flats could also be seen supporting the men standing below. Allegedly, this was from Maharashtra. One post featuring the clip said, “Finally, Hindus are awakening. Visuals from Maharashtra”. Its archive can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that the video had nothing to do with the Maharashtra elections. It’s from Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur and dates back to February 2022. Our Probe We reverse-searched keyframes from the video and found that it was first shared on social media in February 2022. Posts from that time equated it to elections. Using relevant keywords, we found a Facebook post that claimed this clip showed a “Prabhat Pheri” or a morning religious procession carried out by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh workers in multiple residential societies in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur. The names of the societies were also listed in another post. We checked the photos of these societies available on Google Maps. While comparing them with the viral video, we found that it was a society named Diviniti Homes, located in the Kalyanpur locality of Kanpur. India Today reached out to the secretary of Diviniti Homes. He confirmed that the video was from his society and was shot when some RSS workers arrived there before the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh that spanned from February 10 to March 7, 2022, in seven phases. Polls in Kanpur took place on February 20, 2022. Thus, it’s clear that the viral clip has nothing to do with the upcoming Assembly elections in Maharashtra.
