  • Last Updated on July 26, 2024 by Dr Priyamvada Quick Take A Facebook post claims that an Ayurvedic hair oil can regenerate hair in just 14 days. After a thorough fact check, we term this claim False. The Claim According to a Facebook post, there is an Ayurvedic hair oil spray that can miraculously regenerate lost hair in just 14 days. This claim, however, is misleading and unsupported by scientific evidence. The caption of the video contains this: “BUY 1 GET 1 FREE 🔥 Desperate for longer, thicker, fuller and denser hair? 😍 We’ve got you covered with our natural hair oil 👱♀️Thicker-looking hair in 60-90 days ✨ Blend of 11 oils including Rosemary, Argan & Castor ✨ 100% vegan & cruelty free✨ Suitable for all hair types and styles ✨ Satisfaction guaranteed, or your money back” Fact Check What are the common causes of hair loss? Hair loss can occur due to various reasons. These can include genetics, hormonal changes, medical conditions, medications, and lifestyle factors. Common causes include androgenetic alopecia (pattern baldness), alopecia areata (an autoimmune condition), stress, nutritional deficiencies, and certain medical treatments such as chemotherapy. Understanding the underlying cause is important for effective treatment. Is it possible to regenerate hair growth within 14 days by using a hair oil spray? No, it is not possible to regenerate hair growth within 14 days by using a hair oil spray. There is no scientific evidence to support the notion that any topical treatment can produce significant hair growth in such a short time frame. There are approximately 5 million hair on the human skin and about 1 lakh on the scalp. And, hair growth is a gradual process, and even the most effective treatments generally take several months to show noticeable results. A single hair on your scalp usually grows at a rate of approximately 1 cm per month (given, there’s no underlying health condition). It is also important to know the real cause of your hair loss for a proper treatment, as there are various types of hair loss. We sought expert opinion from Dr Jyothy Kannangath, Consultant Dermatologist, Dr Thaj Laser Skin & Hair Clinic, Coimbatore, about the use of unreliable ‘natural’ products for hair loss. She says, “People with allergies may experience a red rash, hives or welts, itchiness, and inflammation or swelling in the affected area. Self-treatments can be risky, potentially leading to infections if not applied correctly. Prolonged use of fake products may result in folliculitis, causing small boils on the scalp.” What is the product about? The product in question claims to treat hair loss and regenerate hair growth in just 14 days. It says that users will grow luscious hair within this period, which is highly unlikely. The video shows two ingredients including ashwagandha and 5% minoxidil. 5% minoxidil is only approved for men and 2% minoxidil is approved for women. Minoxidil is a clinically proven treatment for hair loss. But, it does not produce results in just 14 days. Ashwagandha, an adaptogenic herb, may offer some health benefits but is not scientifically proven to promote rapid hair growth. Additionally, the product’s advertisement contains contradictory messages. The video claims results in 14 days, while the caption suggests 60-90 days for visible results. This inconsistency further undermines the credibility of the product’s claims. Despite the promises, there is no available link to purchase the product. This adds to the doubts and red flags about its legitimacy. Here’s a screenshot of what we got after clicking the link from their ‘About’ page: How can consumers spot unreliable hair products? The market and social media is full of numerous products making all sorts of claims like herbal oil for hair loss reversal and rabbit blood oil for hair growth. But, it is important to be careful and always proceed with caution whenever you encounter any magical solution. Here’s how you can differentiate between genuine and fake products: - Promise rapid results that seem too good to be true - Lack transparency in their ingredients and scientific backing - Have inconsistent or contradictory claims in their advertising - Are not supported by reputable sources or scientific studies What risks come with unverified hair treatments? Using unverified hair treatments can lead to several risks, including: - Allergic reactions or skin irritations - Worsening of the hair condition or increased hair loss - Financial loss from ineffective products - Potential health risks from undisclosed or harmful ingredients - The psychological impact of wrong treatments or products and eventual loss of trust for genuine products too. Are there proven methods for hair regeneration? Yes, there are proven methods for hair regeneration, including: - Medications: FDA has approved Minoxidil (Rogaine) and finasteride (Propecia) as treatments for hair loss. - Hair transplant surgery: This involves moving hair follicles from one part of the scalp to another. - Laser therapy: Low-level laser therapy has shown some promise in promoting hair growth. - Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy: This treatment uses injections of the patient’s own platelets to stimulate hair growth. How can lifestyle choices prevent hair loss? Certain lifestyle choices can help maintain healthy hair and potentially prevent hair loss, such as: - Eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals. - Reducing stress through mindfulness and relaxation techniques can help reduce hair fall due to stress. - Identify and treat the underlying cause by consulting a dermatologist. - Use mild shampoo, moisturising conditioner, leave-in conditioners, and avoid excessive heat styling. - Skip hot-oil treatments, home chemical treatments, and limit heat styling tools. - Avoid tight hairstyles and stop hair-pulling habits. THIP Media Take The claim that an Ayurvedic hair oil can regenerate hair in just 14 days is false. Consumers should be cautious of such misleading advertisements and rely on scientifically proven treatments for hair loss. There have been numerous claims about quick-fix solutions for hair loss, such as Batana oil for treating baldness and hair rejuvenation through collagen hair masks. However, these treatments are still unproven and do not guarantee quick results as they promise. Hair regeneration is a gradual process that requires scientifically backed methods and consistent care, under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
