  • Fact Check: 2021 video of Ramiz Raja lambasting Pak team FALSELY shared as reaction to recent T20 WC defeats After Pakistan's back-to-back defeats in the ongoing T20 World Cup, many on social media shared a video of PCB chairman Ramiz Raja criticising his team. India Today AFWA checks the claim. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video of Raja criticising the Pakistani team is from April 23, 2021. Raja has not yet made any official comment following Pakistan's defeat against Zimbabwe in the ongoing T20 World Cup. After losing to India in a belter of a contest in Melbourne on October 23, Pakistan again faced an embarrassing defeat against Zimbabwe on October 27. Following this, the squad has faced harsh criticism from former Pakistani cricketers. Amid this, many on social media shared a video of Pakistani Cricket Board chairman Ramiz Raja criticising his team for their poor performance. In this video, Raja called the players’ performance “embarrassing” and “shameful”. He further compared Zimbabwe with a “club level” team. Raja also sought answers from those responsible for this. People on Facebook and Twitter shared the video with captions like, "Ramiz Raza very upset and angry for lost match Pakistan vs Zimbabwe in World Cup 2022." An archived version of such a post can be seen here. AFWA's investigation found that this video is more than a year old and not related to Pakistan's recent defeat against Zimbabwe in the ongoing T20 World Cup. AFWA Probe We first searched for news reports to find out if Raja made any comments following Pakistan's defeat against Zimbabwe. We found none. On the contrary, we came across several news reports quoting former Pakistani players who demanded Raja's resignation after the humiliating defeat in Perth. Subsequently, we looked at Pakistan's poor show against Zimbabwe prior to this World Cup. A T20 clash between both teams on April 23, 2021, in Harare, Zimbabwe, saw Pakistan reach 99 all-out while chasing 119. When we searched for news reports around the April 2021 timeline, we found a WION report that quoted Ramiz Raja stating, "I'm shocked as to whether I should analyse this or express anger over this. This clearly is a very dark moment in our history." As these words were familiar with the viral video, we searched for the original one and found it on “Ramiz Speaks”, the official YouTube channel of the former Pakistani cricketer. It was uploaded to YouTube on April 23, 2021, making it clear that the video is more than a year old and not related to the ongoing World Cup. Per the ICC website, Ramiz Raja was formally elected as PCB Chairman on September 13, 2021, almost six months after this match. While back-to-back defeats have made the road to the semi-final for Pakistan even more challenging, this video certainly has nothing to do with it.
