The man, Mayur Borde, is not a BJP leader, but a youth wing leader of the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana. The incident occurred at the Warud branch of the Bank of Maharashtra in Maharashtra’s Jalna district on August 13.
In a video that’s been shared widely on social media shows a bunch of sitting in what appears to be a Bank of Maharashtra office when a verbal altercation escalates to violence. The assaulter, allegedly a Bharatiya Janata Party leader, could be seen slapping the man behind the desk multiple times.
Sharing the viral clip on X, a user wrote, “A BJP leader has the audacity to slap a Public Sector Bank Manager. The Arrogant BJP should soon be taught a lesson.” An archived version of the post can be seen here. The viral clip was also shared by several Facebook users.
India Today Fact Check found that the man assaulting the bank manager was not a BJP leader but Mayur Borde, leader of the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana. He assaulted a branch manager of the Bank of Maharashtra in Maharashtra’s Jalna district.
OUR PROBE
Reverse searching the keyframes of the viral clip, we found its screenshots published in various Marathi and English media reports. An Indian Express report mentions that this incident took place in Maharashtra’s Jalna district on August 13. The report further states that Mayur Borde, a leader of Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana’s youth wing, slapped the manager of the Warud branch of the Bank of Maharashtra.
Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana is a farmers' union affiliated with the Swabhimani Paksha, a political party. According to a report by TV9 Marathi, farmers trying to withdraw money from their accounts were sent away multiple times by the bank manager Dhirendra Sonkar. The farmers reportedly complained to Borde about the same. Angry with the “harassment of farmers”, Borde went to the bank with the farmers and the argument led to him slapping Sonkar.
The bank manager, Dhirendra Sonkar, filed a First Information Report against Borde at Jaffrabad police station.
IS MAYUR BORDE A BJP LEADER?
Mayur Borde is the youth wing leader of Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana. Its political wing, Swabhimani Paksha, was formed by Raju Shetti in 2004. Shetti was a two-time Member of Parliament from Hatkanangale Lok Sabha constituency in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur district from 2009 to 2019. Shetti joined the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance in 2014 but left in 2017 after alleging that the party cheated farmers.
In 2024, Shetti fought the Lok Sabha polls independently and lost to Shiv Sena’s Dhairyasheel Sambhajirao Mane.
Hence, it is clear that Mayur Borde is not a BJP leader.
