  • Fact Check: Rohit Sharma poster NOT displayed at Parliament or Bharat Mandapam Misleading social media posts falsely linked Rohit Sharma's poster to the G20 Summit Venue and the new Indian Parliament. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The viral picture is from Chepauk Stadium in Chennai and is unrelated to the Indian Parliament or Bharat Mandapam. Amid the gathering of world leaders at the 18th G20 Summit hosted at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi's Pragati Maidan, a viral poster featuring Indian cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma began making rounds on social media. According to a social media user, this poster adorned the walls of India's new Parliament and Bharat Mandapam, signifying the country's sporting achievements on a global stage. The Twitter user who shared the viral picture wrote, "Rohit Sharma poster in India's new Parliament and G20 Summit representing the sports honours of our country. Captain Rohit representing sports in G20 has now become a proud moment for all our Indians #G20India #G20India2023." India Today found that this picture has been edited, and was not displayed within either the new Parliament or Bharat Mandapam. Instead, the viral image of Rohit Sharma was displayed at the Chepauk Stadium Museum in Chennai. Our Probe A reverse search of the viral image led us to several social media posts featuring it. A tweet from March 22, 2023, featured the viral picture of Rohit Sharma and specified that it was taken at Chepauk Stadium in Chennai. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Indian Parliament on May 28 and the Bharat Mandapam was inaugurated on July 26. These events evidently occurred months after the tweet was posted. Another tweet from the same date displayed similar posters of former Indian cricket team captains MS Dhoni, Kapil Dev, and Sunil Gavaskar, featuring a similar layout and aesthetic. This tweet indicated as well that the pictures were from Chepauk Stadium, also known as MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. We came across another picture from Chepauk Stadium shared by another Twitter user, which featured MS Dhoni and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin. Furthermore, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared a tweet containing a video tour of Chepauk Stadium, showcasing the same posters. The video featured Indian fast bowler Jaydev Unadkat walking past these posters. It's noteworthy that a new pavilion stand at Chepauk Stadium was inaugurated by the MK Stalin on March 17, 2023. This stand was named the “Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi Stand” in honour of the former Chief Minister of the state. A photo of the wall containing these posters was also tagged on Google Maps at the location of Chepauk Stadium. Thus, it's clear that the viral poster of Rohit Sharma has no connection to either the new Indian Parliament or Bharat Mandapam.
