Vishvas News (New Delhi): A picture of a road is going viral on social media in which many potholes can be seen. Users are making it viral claiming it to be from Varanasi. Vishvas News investigated the viral post and found that this picture has nothing to do with Varanasi. Some users are making an old photo of Mumbai viral with fake claim. Photographer SL Sanath Kumar, who clicked the photo, told Vishvas News that it is an old picture of Mumbai.
Claim
Facebook user Shashank Singh posted a picture on September 4, writing: “NASA satellite reports people coming and going on the moon, but PWD denies, claims it’s their road to Varanasi…”
Assuming this to be true, other users are also making it viral. View the archived version of the Facebook post here.
Investigation
Vishvas News used Google reverse image search tool to know the truth about the viral image. From this we came to know that this picture has been viral since last few years in the names of different areas of the country. We found a news uploaded on the Outlook website on August 7, 2017. The report stated that this picture was from Mumbai. It was clicked by the Times of India photographer SL Sanath Kumar. At that time this picture was viral as that from Karnataka. The viral picture was published in the Mumbai edition of The Times of India on July 23, 2017. This road belonged to Pratiksha Nagar in Mumbai.
Vishvas News contacted photographer SL Sanath Kumar. Through Instagram chat we got to know that this is an old picture of Mumbai and he clicked it.
We scanned the profile of the Facebook user who shared the viral post. We found that the user named Shashank Singh is the resident of Varanasi. His account was created in January 2015 and is followed by 1217 people.
Conclusion: Vishvas News investigated the viral post and found that this picture has nothing to do with Varanasi. Some people are making an old photo of Mumbai viral with fake claim. Photographer SL Sanath Kumar, who clicked the photo, told Vishvas News that it is an old picture of Mumbai.
